Shotgun side saddle shell configuration...

I shoot my shotgun in 3-gun competitions, and I use a style of reloading called "The Cooley Flip".

This style of reloading works by having the shotshells in the side saddle, brass down.

It is not faster than a great weak-hand loader. But I can load around 8 shotshells in about 7 seconds.

I sold the side saddle on my 590a1. 7+1 does the trick. On my SxS, I have a "butt cuff" with the brass on top, shell pointing down.

3 Gun Gear makes the 2 shell holder for the forearm, they also make a couple of other combinations. They also made the side saddle on Raymonds gun. Great products.
I have been running their side saddle for over 7 years, had to change the velcro once that as glued to the receiver. Most 3 gunners run brass down for the Cooley flip strong hand loading. They also make an 8 shell holder for your arm and another 8 add on.
Total of 16 on your arm, 8 on the side saddle and 9 in gun, plus the 2 pack, 35 total should get you thru most stages or zombie attacks.

i have a 4 shot side saddle on my 870, 2 00buck, 2 slugs. 1st slug for an over the top slug changeover, my 2nd slug is brass down for feeding the tube for a follow-up shot(double slug changeover). dont mind my saddle in my sig pic, it was my old setup.

here is a video I just made today, Friday the 4th.

Me and a few buddies went out to the Richmond Rod & Gun Club for some Carbine, Pistol, and shotgun practice. The training and practice was great...but the fellowship is what I yearn for the most.

Here is an example (although not too good), of the "Cooley Flip" reload. Whayt I like the most about it, is that I can run fully upright, and every shell grabbed and loaded is positive. (I have a solid/firm grasp on each and every shell loaded).

Don't laugh too hard, as I am still pretty new to this 3-gun sport.

Dude that is awesome! Never seen that "Cooley Flip" before...makes since to have brass down for sure on that style. Good times! And thanks for getting that up for the demo

My carbine has the new 3-port compensator, and it is loud. Look closely, and check out the gas being shot out to the left and right when I shoot.

And finally (not wanting to offend anybody, but being truthful), those who say "brass down" is no good - for whatever reason - are not too knowledgable about shooting. Get a good side-saddle, and you will have no problems. Get cheap plastic gear made in China...and yeah...expect problems. (Brass down, or brass up).

Just wanted to clarify something. Richmond R&GC has some of the best shooters in the world here.

We have a great safety class every 3rd week where we orient new shooters to the USPSA safety and range rules. (What you will be taught can be carried to any USPSA match throughout the United States).

The range has a variety of great matches - from Glock matches, to rimfire matches, to pistol and rifle matches. Once you take the safety/orientation class, you are welcome to come practice on Saturdays. (The ONLY TIME the action range is open to the general public for practice).

What we are doing here is for RO's only.

Anyhoo...I just wanted to get that off of my chest.

By the way, Chabot is having a pistol/rifle match this Sunday. Drop on by to take a looksey. Hang-out, ask questions, and learn the gear and firearms folks are using. (Not the tacticool foolks, but the ones who know what they are doing). Get you feet wet, as Chabot is the place to do it.

If you are going over the top to port load, then brass up is probably best. Topping off the tube is, I think, the more likely/common reloading scenario and brass down serves that better. On my own guns and how I have always trained, it's brass down. I keep the two forward most holes with slugs, the other four are 00 buck.

As tyrist notes, brass up is the most secure but I'd make the argument that if you are using a side saddle that gets loose it's probably time for a different side saddle.

according to some guys my Home Defense Mossberg 500 pursuader is then mall ninja tacticool -> 6 shell side saddle pistol grip both forward & rear since its the one with out a back stock, and a Fenix TK10 light.

I dont want to shoot in the dark. Do you? The shotgun course's Ive taken all have said that the light is the most important part of a Home Defense shotgun, you can always get a speedfeed stock, a trap belt ready with ammo near the gun, in case of intruder. IMO i like the side saddle, I have mine with slugs and two buckshot, the tube is already filled with the buckshot so I can top load slugs if need be

RANT TIME: talk all your sh*t about how tacticool & mall ninja'd shooters are lame or funny or fill in your adjective BUT if it wasnt for these shooters OUR shooting sport would no longer exist. Yes I do think there is a fine line that one can cross.....dress up in full SWAT outfit with kevlar, take your AR out and cant even get on paper @ 25 yards - you might have a Call Of Duty vs. reality issue. Leave the vest for your airsoft party, but some of you "purists" lose sight of the fact that if it was not for the new younger shooters coming into our sport, the sport would die out! Thank you, end rant.
