Go to the local gun store and see what shoulders best for you. Also see where you prefer the safety location on each brand. Lastly see if you can handle whatever hd load you will be using (to know if you need a better recoil pad or stock). I prefer a mossberg 500 for My HD needs. Ymmv.

All guns mentioned are nice shooters but I haven't shot a savage yet. Hope this helps.

    WTB used AK MFER.

You will be very well served with the Remington HD model #25077. Has an 18.5" barrel, Remington two shot Extension, Speedfeed LE forend and Remington synthetic rear stock. Can be found for around $320 to $350 depending on where you are. It comes with a $30 if purchased before 12/31/2010.

There is only one 870 and they are all the same, built with the same parts except a couple of small parts. They differ only by finish and furniture so the above model is an excellent value.

As others have pointed out it's an age old question and everyone will have an opinion including me. Personally for home defense it's a Winchester pump. I've always looked at it this way - if you have an intruder inside the house it won't matter if they guess your location or not when you rack a shell. The bigger picture is balancing clarity of mind in the heat of the moment. You need a weapon that is easy to use (pump), small enough to handle quickly (18" barrel), and as close to 100% reliable as possible (manual vs. automatic chamber action). While a semi is faster with follow-up, the time variable is negligible if you keep your wits. A pump shotgun, especially one you've stripped, shot, and maintained (vs. in the closet gathering dust and suddenly pressed into service) is going to be your best friend when it hits the fan. Your mileage may vary and I don't claim to be an expert. Regardless of what you select, I think everyone would agree you need to include a tactical review of your surroundings and contingency planning before you need them.

I use a old Mossberg 500 that my grandfather gave me for two reasons it is reliable, and it is loud. When I pump that sucker my neighbors hear it and any thug that is going to break into your house knows what sound a shotgun makes and if he (or she) is smart then they know that means get the hell out of my house.
(take it from me I speak gun shotgun racking in the dark translates to "get out of my house now!")
That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Dosen't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month.

Please do a search O.o.... I purchased an 18 1/2" 870 clone from Big 5 for $199. Works great does the job /shrug. Chances are it's gonna sit in your closet forever anyways.

I dont get everyones obsession with pump guns. The fact is that no matter what you use for home defence you need to train with that weapon to find its pros and con. so you can learn to overcome them when that weapon is put into action.

People like pump guns for the simple fear factor /shrug. Say whatever you want but if I' am knocking on someones door or trying to break in and I hear a pump in action I' am crapping my pants. With an Auto shotty there's not really any warning you're gonna hve to shoot them. and the pump is cheaper.

Maybe true. I would rather them not hear me take my 1100 off safe.

I have an 870 as well and am waiting on my M4 to show up. My 870, this is my second one works awesome, have had no failures or problems. It chews any ammo you throw in it and currently are on sale at B5 for 329 after the mail in rebate. The Nova is also on sale for 349 after mail in rebate.

Lots of choices none really to bad, all on what you want it for and how much you are willing to spend. Hell you can even go with the Stoeger DD, I think its bad ace looking.

To clarify, I was loading up the 870 with rounds and the range master who's boyfriend I know said only one round loaded at any time. The other skeet range I went to had the same rule. No big deal really but the OP should know range rules if he is going their with his shotty. Good thing is my 870 loads easy all the time with no problems at all.

Why would you rather them not hear you? I think that is called murder. You have to anonuce your self to an inturder and nothing says "Get the F out of my house" like a pump shotgun racking. You can't just see someone in your home or on your property and shoot them.

Can you put up a link that states the law that says I have to anonuce myself to an inturder? If that is a fact, and I dont think it is! Your working the action of a pump shot gun does not hold water in a court. Why the hell would you want an inturder to know where you are, and that you are armed.

FWIW, my experieence at trap/skeet ranges the rule is 2 *loaded* rounds are okay at the station at which you are required to engage multiple (2) targets. One in the chamber and one in the tube. Two simultaneously launched clays at one of the stations for instance requires 2 shots. Typically station 1, 2, 5, or 7. At other stations with only one clay to engage, the appropriate load would be one shell only.

OK, here's my take on this:

Home Defense: any Mossberg 500 model w/ a nice rear stock in back. Reason? Rear stock fosters the optimal stability and aim for the shotgun. It also allows five more rounds in the form of a buttcuff or speedstock.

Why Mossberg over Remington/other for HD? Thumb safety...you go from thumb right into trigger...no hesitation because both fingers are right where they need to be due to the design of the classic Monte Carlo stock shotgun. Your index finger when picking up a shotgun naturally wants to go to trigger whereas your thumb on your firing hand is right above the reciever due to the Monte Carlo stock and design...even in HD scenario in the middle of night. Hence, the natural movement of pulling the safety off w/ thumb and fire w/ trigger in the dead of night...no line of sight required to perform this action.

W/ Remington 870, there is the chance, ever so slight but is there, of fingering around for safety button with trigger finger in the safety guard, then moving to trigger. If you have trained well on your Rem. 870, then no problem. Most LEO's and S/O's have, so there is no problem for them...if you have trained on an 870 consistantly. Also, for many shooters outside of the tactical world, it just comes naturally because they have other hunting/sport weapons that have similar safety guard configs as the 870...however, I've seen those who fumblef@$! around with that safety trigger on the 870 before they fire....that's the difference between life and death in the SHTF scenario when its coming down the milliseconds and one shot between you and them is the difference between drinking your dinner out of a straw or being your son's/daughter's/main squeeze's hero.

For hunting and sport?...same as tactical....get to know your shotgun intimately and the rules/algorhythms of your game..whatever it is. It is ultimately your training, wisdom, knowledge of you and your weapon and your awareness of your environment, not necessarily your gun, that will make the ultimate decsion in your success or failure in your sport, hunting, HD, or tactical exercises.

P.S. Negolien...I promise you, if you have no clue what "imminent danger" is or how it is used in California law as you have so aptley made aware to every LEO and S/O in California through your last post on this thread, I suggest you call up your Mom, Dad, wife, girlfriend, psychiatrist tomorrow and give them your weapons until you do. I am not kidding on this either, that last comment is inappropriate, I hope to God you never get caught in a HD situation, you will wind up dead or in jail for the rest of your life as other's pay the price for your negligence of the law of the land and recklessness and a great way to fuel more fire in the cauldron of the gun control advocates in this state who seek to take my remaining responsible gun ownership rights away. I promise you and Marine...if you two ever shoot a man for just tresspassing, even if the suspect is armed or unarmed, you will do serious time, I also promise if you shoot an intruder in the back as he's egressing your property, even if the suspect is armed or unarmed, you will do serious time. Only, and only in this situation can you fire...it is called "imminent danger" go look it up at wikipedia or www.bsis.ca.gov. Outside of "imminent danger" you shoot, you're done....and you will be Bubba's new love scrunchie on Cell Block B for the rest of your days...guaranteed.

And as for the idiot at the beginning of this thread saying pumps bring more people in???? I'm sure more suspects will rush right in like a Bruce Lee movie wanting to challenge the loading of shot into a weapon which can remove half your body mass in one shot....lols....dumba@! Go back to popping your zits and playing Counterstrike please and give Mom and Dad their weapons back, they are probably pissed you took them to begin with. Maybe a brilliant tactic in your Steam game, but stupid in real life.

Unlike Counterstrike, LEO's and S/O's or War Vets, will tell you there is no "reset" button. Hence, you hear the click of a pump shotgun...you run for cover/concealment or hit the deck before you become Ichabod Crane.

                                That's just my take.
