take a hunter safety course, they have(at least mine did) a good half dozen blown barrels like the one pictured. It's always from an obstruction, that's why they emphasize keeping the barrel out of the dirt...I always wondered what morons they were talking to, guess that guy is one of them!

As soon as the staff over at eBay sees it, they will kill the auction and put a ding on the seller's account. Blown or not, they do not allow barrels to be sold on eBay. Stuff like that may sneak on, as not every listing is reviewed by a person. But they almost always catch it before the item sells. I don't like it, but that is how eBay works.

also, an improperly loaded shell, one that doesn't push the shot/wad/whatever all the way down the barrel. On the next shot, bad things happen.
Why would someone do that exactly, and why would the 20 gauge followed by a 12 gauge shot blow up the barrel?

They do not do it intentionally.

A 20 gauge shell loaded into a 12 gauge gun will pass through the chamber and obstruct the barrel, the following 12 gauge shell loaded into the chamber and fired will not be able to vent and gasses down the barrel. This results in failure.

Ever notice that all 20 gauge shells are yellow? It's for this exact reason.

This friday I was cringing as I was watching a few people shoot trap, waiting to shoot they had the barrel pointed down nearly touching the ground. Good way to plug a barrel when the ground is soft.

                        Here's why:

This is the reason why ALL 20 gauge rounds are colored yellow.

Not that they are a much better source than Wiki, but Mythbusters tried doing this and could never reproduce it. I'm not saying that it is not possible, but with newer metals and manufacturing technology I don't see this happening much anymore.

I once saw the end of a tank tube blown out from what they figured were pebbles in the barrel. That is why they have covers when their in storage or transport. Weird things happens to guns when people are involved.
