With the proper training and practice a single can be a solid defensive gun. It shouldn't be over looked.

How do you manage at the stations where two birds are thrown?

i run a single shot 20ga for trap, its a lot of fun. if youve never shot a round of trap, you ought to try it! if that shotgun points well for you, that is all that matters. you will do well with it. if it doesnt fit you at all, then at least keep it as an heirloom, and pass it on down the line...

Keep the full stock, add a butt cuff. If you go PG on a single shot, there will be no place to store shells. If it's an HD gun, and something goes bump in the night, where are you going to put your shells if you have no pockets?

But if you must go pg, I say custom wood birds head! It won't have a full stock, but atleast it would look cool (gonna do it to my single shot h&r because I have 2 butt stocks for it) BUT if you want to keep it original and pass it down, don't cut it. Also keep OAL in mind. 26" min

Haven't tried to shoot doubles with it. Just started skeet shooting been once so far. It not my only shotgun I got a pump if need be, but I liked using my single for it.

One of my favorite guns to shoot is an ancient Iver Johnson 16 gauge single barrel, exposed hammer and all. Shot my first 25 straight with that old family hand me down.

All that said, Clint Smith demonstrates how effectively and efficiently a single barrel shotgun can be run for self defense.

My recommendation is to leave the full stock alone. Clean the gun up and put it away for your kids when they get older. It'll be a good gun for them to learn on.

Call me sentimental, but if my dad gives me any of his guns. I will definately keep them. The decision will be on my son/daughter if they want to sell or not.

The 16 gauge Iver Johnson I mentioned came from my dad... it has a special place in my safe and will go (along with his other long guns) to his only grandson when comes my time.

Switching to Mad Max mode, it would be a good thing to use as a trigger for a SHTF scenario. Mount it securely, pointed at the weakest part of your 300 gallon propane tank and tie a string to the trigger. Tie the other end of the string to something irresistible to zombies!

After a bunch of practice with my bolt action shotgun I was able to keep up with my friends shooting clays, they all had semi's! So it can be done. Practice with what you have! Other than that....I agree with let that gun stay with the family!

No sentimental value? If it has a "classic" look, then it would be a great piece to hand down and say:

                            "This was your grandfathers."

If your daughter isn't interested, hope for a good son in law. My soon to be father in law floored me last Christmas with a gift that keeps on giving. One day I hope to pass it down.

The pistol grip thing was a joke.

I'll have to try some trap shooting one of these days, and see if I can shoot it.

                              Thanks for all the replies.

Best suggestion yet. If you fail just like most of us will, follow the advice of others. Develop a hobby of cleaning it and keeping it in the greatest shape. Pass it on to your kid and she'll make a boat load of money selling it 50 years from now.
We all know that marksmanship training is important in order to become a specialised, efficient and accurate marksman. "One shot from a small caliber weapon in the hands of an expert is three times better than a magazine full of elephant killing rounds in the hands of an untrained fool."
