I sincerely apologize to op if I came on a little abruptly. Thick skin is a plus on the internet. Nothing like getting a headache from yet another 'what should be my first shotty' thread after a biatch of a week at work. Beginning a reasonable thread with "WTF" indicates a major parental failure somewhere in the past. You might seriously consider a writing coach before you apply for college.

    I keep visualizing this...

    or this...

Personally, I'm ibtl. Have a good weekend!!

True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

Get a mossberg 500/590 and buy a blackhawk knoxx stock.

The 887 is remingtons answer to the nova. They are very similar.

For the OP, check out a youth model b/c the stocks are shorter and might fit you better rather than a full size.

Dave's suggestion in an authentic albeit shortened Mossberg 500, possibly including a Cruiser model or original 590 (but NOT a front-heavier 590 A-1) sounds good. The reduced recoil 12 ga. is, luckily, readily available but I'd keep it to #4 buskshot for closer range HD...

So, a fo'tay is not a malt liquor but some kind of gun? .40 S&W!?

I like 500/590 ergonomics (placement of safety/mag release) much more than on an 870.

the 590a1 action is very rough but that does not affect the function.

I keep the 590a1 for home defense purposes, being left handed and with smaller hands, the top safety and mag release behind the trigger guard are more natural for me.

i've got a 34 year old 870 wingmaster for shooting clays that is an absolute pleasure to shoot, but i dislike the ergonomics of the safety and mag release. not really an issue because out shooting clays is not a life or death situation.

You can't really go wrong with a quality pump action from the larger manufacturers, imo.

only thing i can suggest is to take length of pull into account. i don't know how much you can reduce the LOP on a Nova with it's fixed stock. i know you can get different pads, but how much reduction you get i'm unsure.

correct LOP could mean the difference between enjoying practicing with your shotgun and keeping it in the closet all the time.

                .40 s&w is a round.... not a gun!

I still can't believe I saw WTF and shotty in a title....

I'm going to assume you're male rather than female, though if female keep in mind you'll have lower strength than a comparably sized male (almost always anyway).

Gas guns generally spread the recoil impulse over a longer period of time and will, generally, feel like they have less recoil. However, some gas guns will not function reliably with low recoil or low power type loads.

In addition to reduced power loads, loads throwing less mass, if available, will recoil less, all else being equal.

The pump action obviates that problem, but make sure you are able to comfortably operate a pump. You will likely need the stock shortened to help with this, but make sure the stock is constructed in such a way that shortening it will not weaken it and still allow installation of a recoil pad.

Kick-Eeez pads will help spread out the recoil impulse over time and cushion the recoil giving you a feeling of reduced recoil (I word it this way because the recoil is the same but you feel it differently but I'll spare you the physics lesson). These pads, however, can get hung up on your clothing when shouldering the gun in a hurry. Proper training with an out and in motion can ameliorate this problem.

If you have good upper body strength adding weight to the gun will reduce recoil quite a bit. Some shooters have mercury capsules or lead weights added to the butt stock. Lead weights that fasten under the barrel are also available.

I would get to a local range that rents a variety of these guns and see which ones you feel comfortable with. I, personally, don't think anyone should be relying on a gun they physically and psychologically don't feel comfortable with in a self defence type situation.

After that, I would then worry about budgeting for and finding a good used example and then worrying about after market parts.

Reliability is a tough call because so much of that is based on use and environment. For example, a trap shooter who shoots 20,000 - 40,000 full-house loads, or a soldier going through mud and dust, have different concepts of what gun can take it from someone who goes dove hunting twice a year or someone with a "shotty" in their closet that only comes out once every other month for a few shots at the local range.

                    YMMV.
