Cleaning a pump

On my bolt action rifles, I remove the bolts and clean from the breech with a bore guide. I don't go back and forth - just one way so I don't drag dirt back in. Just got my first pump action shotgun and am trying not to introduce dirt into the action. Is a bore snake the best way to go? Just feed from the breech and pull it out the barrel (not back and forth)? Thanks.

Just take the barrel off and clean from the breech end.

im not sure if it matters with a shotgun but I clean mine the same way your asking about, I always figured its not going to hurt it but there is a possibility of hurting it by just going ape **** on it. I hope im making sense.

Out of curiosity why do you remove the barrel then clean with a boresnake? Isn't the boresnake designed to clean your gun without taking it apart?

I run a boresnake through mine at the end of my range session without removing the barrel. When I do a more throrough cleaning I'll strip it all the way down to clean/lube the parts, but that only happens once or twice a year. I haven't found the need to clean my 870 very often. Even after 500 rounds there is barely any dirt inside.

I usually take out the barrel since my 28" is hard to work with since its length. I personally use a Tornado brush to get all that plastic out, then just get a rag with some CLP on it and wipe the exposed insides.

strip it all the way down, clean each part, and reassemble correctly. I use the boresnake for the final run thru on the barrel only.
