First clay shooting shotgun question ...Saiga?

Will a Saiga be good enough for clay shooting? I want a shotgun for a home defense weapon and to also be able to use it clay shooting....have been thinking an 870 but also wondering if a Saiga would be any good?

Are you talking Trap? Skeet? Sporting Clays? Probably for all three the Saiga is not a good choice. What length of barrel? You probably want a minimum barrel length of 26" and you will also want it choked to a modified or full depending on the game. I don't think the Saiga has a choke.

In a word no, but if you are out throwing clays with your buddies why not. Load up a mag of 10 and dump them all going for one clay if you want.

Just don't try that at an organized range.

An 870 is a great shotgun for shooting clays.

Also the Mossberg 500 combo from big5 is a great deal for a home defense + multipurpose shotgun. Lots of people complain about them, but if you want a great deal and a shotgun that will go bang every single time, it's hard to beat the price.

Saigas are not ideal for any of the clay shooting games, where you will be continually loading and firing one or two rounds. Safety rules prohibit you from walking around with a loaded gun, and the mag lock will drive you crazy. Just get an 500/870.

I say you can hit clays at max range of 25 yards. I tried with my M500A with a 20" barrel and anything past that you cant hit..and if you do it'll be 2-3 pellets...which sometimes isnt even enough to break or chip anything off the clay.

I have a Browning BPS, my two buddies have a Super Nova and an 870 express respectively. Personally I would put the 870 express last, way last(I'm assuming you're talking about the Express model and not the Wingmaster which is a great shotgun). It felt very cheaply made. It rattled a lot and I hated the way it pointed but that is just me. Personally I really like the BPS. Very nicely made, points great, and smooth action. They cost a bit more but as far as pumps go, I think it is right up at the top. The Super Nova or Nova are also fine shot guns. The feel of it can take a bit to get used to but still a nice shottie that is economic.

The Saiga 12 may not be ideal but I sure had a lot of fun while shooting clays with it. I wouldnt want to shoot a BG with a Saiga though. Something more sheep friendly like a 870 or 500 is probably more practical.

+1 on the M4. I can break clay all day with that thing.
