A shorter barrel with the right choke absolutely will work. I use 24 inch with choke tubes on my Mossberg 500 and (soon) my 1100. My O/U is 28 inch but hefts and feels shorter.

Some clubs will not let you shoot a short barrel, but that varies from club to club. I've actually had very good luck shooting 16 yard trap with an 18 inch IC choked 870.

You can shoot at clays with anything you want.

If you want to hit them, get a longer barrel.

Try to find an old 870 Wingmaster.
