+1 on the Mossberg 500 combo from Big 5. 28" barrel it comes with works well when I'm out throwing clays with my buddies. Though you can shoot them with the 18" barrel too, you just have to be a little quicker

The Saiga should work for shooting clays with your friends and having a great old time during the afternoon, though don't expect to be winning any competitions, and you will have reduced range compared to a shotgun more designed for what you are doing.

What kind of budget are you working with? If you only have $200-300, a Mossberg combo from Big 5 like others have suggested is your best choice. It's not particularly flashy, but it'll work.

If you can spring a few extra hundred dollars, you'll definitely appreciate something a little nicer. You can get a brand new Remington 870 Wingmaster with a long barrel for about $650, and then you can pick up a shorter home defense barrel for another $150ish. The Wingmaster will be a FAR more refined weapon than the cheapo Mossberg 500.

Here's my .02

Get a H&R Excell Auto 5. Semi-auto, comes with 4 chokes, 3 shims for patterning, well made and totally reliable. It comes with a 28" barrel, but you can get a 24" or 26" for $49 and additional chokes for $10. So go clay shooting, then swap out your barrel when you get home. Takes about 45 seconds to do it.

Google it and read the reviews before some shotgun snob tells you it's crap. It's not. And the best part? You can get a new one for around $350.

It's the same basic gun as the Verona 405 so barrels and chokes from the Verona will fit.

A Saiga is a novelty gun. You will want a more traditional gun for clays of any sort. Many ranges won't even let you shoot a Saiga or other shotgun with pistol grips, a less than 24" barrel ETC. On the Trap range you can only load single shells unless you are shooting doubles, then you can load 2 like the skeet range. I am not a Mossberg fan but the combo would be adequate. I would prefer a Remington or Browning of some sort with a modest barrel length (28"?) and interchangeable chokes. I shoot a Krieghoff's, Browning's and Remington's right now. My kids tried the Benelli's and have sold them in favor of there Remington 11-87's. The 11-87 handles a wide variety of loads from target to heavy magnum without a hiccup which is a good thing for a semi auto. It is a very versatile gun. Our 870's are also very versatile and super performers. A lot of these guys say "I shoot a lot of Clays with my HD shotgun".......Well We see those guys, They hit a few birds, but my novice wife is shooting 23-25 birds (out of 25) with her 870 Wingmaster.

Ditto on the Wingmaster. You'll be much happier with something quality instead of a Big 5 special. Used Wingmaster and BPS pumps can be had for $200-$400 depending on condition. Check the auction sites like GunBroker and AuctionArms. There are guys on there that have no problem selling to a CA resident.

i shoot clays and other "things" with a saiga for years....get one with a threaded muzzle and stick a poly choke on it.

Most places have a 2 round rule. Saiga is not optimal

I have a Saiga and to tell you the truth in its California configuration it woudl not be my go to gun for anything except the initial hold back the zombies and then move to the next easier to load gun.

other than that Saiga is great for conversation, or play around at the gun range but for skeet or most others as it stands no it woudl be pretty worthless.

I got lucky I didnt have to pay that much for mine ..
To the OP: Grab an 870 wingmaster..i was able to get mine used for like 260$, and if you get sick of shooting clays 870's make nice HD guns.

I say you can hit clays at max range of 25 yards. I tried with my M500A with a 20" barrel and anything past that you cant hit..and if you do it'll be 2-3 pellets...which sometimes isnt even enough to break or chip anything off the clay.

Is this the fault of the 20" brl or the choke?
I'd like to try my 870 tac. with a tighter choke.
Haven't shot clays at a club, but can't' see why the shorter brl., with the right choke wouldn't work.
