    Brother,

it depends on what you want to do with it.

Do you need reliability unto death for home defense?

Do you need accuracy for distance shooting with slugs?

Do you want lightness for speedy target acquisitions during multi-gun matches?

Thers' no such thing as a "do all" shotty. (But some get pretty close). You gotta purchase your toys for a specific purposes.

Your initial question is too vague. What is it's primary purpose?

It's like asking: "Do I purchase a Ferrari, a Hummer, or a Benz"? (All are made for different purposes).

I know you said no, but Im going to say it again, skip the pump, buy a saiga12. Once warmed up, I PROMISE YOU it will never ONCE fail you.

Done stuff to mine that in the same experiment, an 870 and moss 500 failed at.

I have yet for a benilli guy to accept my challenge against the saiga.

5150, you are going to make yourself crazy, stop the comparisons.

Since you are having problems deciding go cheap and buy a used base model 870 for $200-250. Get to know it by shooting and playing with it. I'm sure you will love it but if you don't just sell it and try something else.

My perspective is you can never be without at least 1 870. I happen to have 4 of them. 870P, 870 Express 12, 870 Express 20, 870 Wingmaster .410.

I'm going to buy a Saiga 12 someday, they look like too much fun, but my basics are well covered.

          870. Durable, reliable, found inexpensive used, lots of aftermarket mods. I like the Saiga too, but don't you need a BB to keep it from being an AW?

I still prefer my Gold as my "Do all" shotgun.. Hunting, clays, action shotgunning.. it does it all.. I can hunt big game with slugs if I wanted to (I don't really), I can add the +4 mag tube for SD or Competition, I can put it back to it's original configuration and put a mag block in for hunting.. It does everything I want it to. It fires every load from the lightest 7/8 ounce target load up to the heaviest 3" slug, steel, bismuth, heavy shot, etc hunting load without a hiccup. I don't need to warm it up to guarantee that it shoots.. it runs cold or hot, rain or shine, wet or snowy.. clean or dirty (Kent Fast steel is the dirtiest ammo I shoot, and it'll fire a case or more of this stuff before needing to be cleaned).

870's are ok for most things and it will likely run when the Gold stops running.. but I've rarely had reason for it to stop running.. It is easy to break down and requires no tools for it to get down to trigger group, barrel, gas piston, action, forestock, bolt, and mag tube spring and follower. Wipe it all out and lube it in specific places, put it together and keep shootin'.

Oop... of those three, the 870.. if I had my druthers.. Gold

you are right. I could make myself crazy. I like the suggestion of buying and trying. I guess my purpose is I want to see comparisons to make good choice, but I will be happy with either and both. thanks man.

What did a semi do that the pumps failed at?

                In Christ: Raymond
during one test nothing else would chamber the rusted up shells I was firing, and when they did, the pieces would hang the action up after being fired. the saiga 12 just laughed at me and didnt even hiccup even with a crapload of unburnt powder and hull/base pieces in the action and mag. this test was after leaving guns and shells outside for several hours prior and then firing in winter, at about 5F.

Actually, this was done crap, 5 years ago? and just last month was the first time the gun was REALLY thoroughly cleaned. there were still small pieces of metal in the action from that day.

I DARE you to put your benelli or pump against my saiga12. you will cry when you see what Im gonna do to them both, equally.

Dood, he wants a pump. I had two pumps before I got my 11-87, then got a 1100, then got a M500. If he wants a Pump, let him decide on a pump. Saiga is a great gun but as of the moment, he just wants a pump. Besides, the price right now is toooooo high for a Saiga 12g concidering that it cost some $450 before the crazy. I see Saiga going to 800-1400....thats 37,000+ 1oz slugs, or 77,777+ 180gr 40SW bullets for me. hahaha..

If you purchased the Remmy 870P for HD...keep is simple. (KISS).

Good sights, and maybe a light. That's it.

Everything else is just "tacticool" garbage.

I replaced my stock, and got a HiViz front sight, because of the 3-gunning biz. But it is still pretty stock, and it is dead solid for home defense.

The ghost ring sights on mine are beneficial for the longer (50+ yard) slug shots needed at matches. But if you are not shooting for pinpoint accuracy, you can do without the ghost ring.

Like I said, if you are using it for HD, then a solid light addition may do the trick.

The Remmy 870P is the cream of the crop in pump-action shotties. (Good choice).

PS: I do not understand how a semi-auto Saiga (which relies on the gas from the expended shell to cycle the action) could be more reliable than the muscles of your arm physically cycling the action. Go figure.

Yes, I dont want tacticool. that is lame. it just has the regular stock on it. it has extended tube too.

I was thinking how putting pistol grip or telscoping stock for my soon to be wife though.

good to know about ghost ring. I would like to shoot skeet with it maybe.

                          your thoughts?

Ghost rings work for distance accuracy with slugs.

If you are skeet/clay shooting, a regular bead site would be fine.

If you are multi-gunning, a fiber optic front sight would be nicer.

But for HD, remember the FO sights will not glow indoors. They need to gather light on the sides of the tubes to project it towards the ends. This will BARELY work indoors.
