I am far from an expert on anything shotgun as I have always gravitated towards the AR platform. However, I do own several shotguns. Including two meant for self-defense by their design. I was always taught that #00 buck shot was king for this purpose. This would be my go-to for most self-defense purposes along with keeping a couple slugs in the side saddle for when needed. Birdshot is meant for birds, and snakes.

I was given some interesting ammo from Winchester called PXDL Defender that has a 1" rifled slug and 3 #00 buck pellets. Have yet to try it out and pattern it. I wouldn't want to use it for the typical slug usage. Headshots or door frames. Those 3 00 buck pellets would be risky. But it would make an interesting alternative to #00 buck shot for what you would normally want #00 buck shot for.

I just saw a video on this. The conclusion was the 3 buck shots are completely unnecessary. If you hit with the slug, the 3 buckshots won’t do much more. If you missed with the slug, you most likely missed with the 3 buckshots as well. More importantly, if you missed with the slug, where is it going? I’ll try to find the video and link it.

Well, I've got about 20 boxes of it. LOL. Got it as a gift. Might as well keep it. Hope to get a chance for a range trip to an open range someday soon. That way I can try it out. Maybe burn through it all for kicks.

You can always keep them for novelty. Those are like $2 a pop.

I just bought some Fiocchi #1 buckshot for home defense. I live in the suburbs so range is not a concern, but over penetration is. I also read about the "9th pellet flyer" phenomenon for #00 buckshot loads. This 9-pellot #1 buckshot defensive load gives tight pattern with low recoil. It should be perfect for the suburbs. The biggest downside is that it won't cycle recoil operated shotguns. It works for gas operated shotguns though.
