was getting sick of not having a shoulder strap/more pockets on my hardcase anyway.

Do you guys know if this principle applies to pistols as well? seems odd to me since most pistols i've seen come in foam hardcases.
To be honest, I wouldn't store it in that case either, but you could at least spray some silicone in there which would certainly help. Cases like that, and the Plano, Doskocil or Pelican hard cases are for carting your guns to and from the range, hunting or whatever. They really aren't intended for long term storage.

And yes, same applies to handguns that aren't stainless steel.

When I suggested a gun sock I had this in mind.

I'm getting rust like within 1 week, it's pretty freaky and I haven't owned this thing for more than a month.....
I spray the Rem Oil on a cleaning patch and rub all over my 870.
receiver, barrel, action bars, everything that is exposed.

I do NOT wipe dry. I store the shotgun as is, wet.

ah I guess i'll get a gunsock then. Bollocks, thanks for the heads up. I wish I had room for a gun safe, but won't till I close escrow on my house.
For the time being, I guess I shouldn't store it in my case at all when it's at home? Maybe shove it in a closet?

Gunsocks are ok but REALLY slow you down if you need the gun in a hurry.

The foam cases are a mistake, they're strictly for transportation. Wipe that gun down with oil and it will be fine. I went thru this a couple years back, haven't had any issue since I ditched the foam.

That is exactly why I asked. Had the same issue with rust after storing in a case.

I have been told the ideal environment is "open air," meaning the gun is stored where air can circulate around the gun and thus not accumulate moisture on a spot.

Of course a gun safe is best for this. If that is not an option, and you want some protection, then try a silicone lined gun sock.

If safety is a worry then invest in a trigger lock or even a long cable lock that is attached to a wall stud.
