Remington 870 Rust problems

got 2 870's i've been using for Trap shooting for the past year.

i dont bother cleaning it besides running a boresnake and the customary wipe down of the shotgun with a rag.

took my shotguns out today and i noticed rust on both Receivers and Followers. the rust came off with alittle oil and rubbing.

i've experience rust before on my 870s but mainly on the barrel never on the receiver.

i thought the Parkerization on the receiver is suppose to protect it from rust.

it was superficial rust but i can see where it "ate" into the metal follower.

anything i can do or use to keep it from rusting again?

870 Express or Police? Since you mentioned shooting clays it sounds like you have the Express versions?

If so, they're matte blued, not parkerized and do tend to be easier to rust. Keep it oiled is the best solution for ensuring a rust free 870.

1st 870: is the express model with 28in barrel.

2nd 870: is Express Security model, 18in barrel.
( i bought a used 28in barrel off shotgunworld.com for this one to shoot trap)

i'm sure their Both parkerized. they both got the same finish.

and i got them both from Big 5.

your right, it's a Black Matte finish.. not parkerized.

You have the matte finish. It is applied finish and is a rust magnet. Worst out there. In Florida I could clean my weapon and if I touched metal when I was putting it in the closet I could see my finger prints in rust when I check the weapon after a few weeks. I had it parkerized and that ended the issue..You should think about having them parkerized as Parkerizing is best and most durable and as it is very pourous it retains the oil in the pours and can be left for months and not rust..... having the weapon bead blasted and parkerized will give you a perfect finish. I use heavy zinc and a Zap blackner and the finish takes anything guys can throw at it...... Get the barrels done also as they have the same matte finish as the receiver....

how much did it cost to Parkerized the whole shotgun? barrel and receiver.

DON'T use oil on the exterior of any weapon it's only for use in minute amounts internally in weapons.I had a GS who trained me and all of his customers to clean the exterior of a blued steel weapons of all oil residue by using naptha (coleman fuel) .His method was to Use TREWAX to coat the exterior of blued steel weapons one can buff it or not,if hunting I don't buff mine I leave it dull to reduce reflection.None of my rifles,shotguns or handguns have ever had any rust on them as long as I remembered to wax them after cleaning. I saw rifles being returned for servicing by their owners who had been hunting in the Tongass NF in Alaska where rainfall tops 14 feet a year none had massive rusted areas the trewax protected the blued steel.My GS used 4 ought steel wool & a bit of oil to remove rust then cleaned the weapon and when it left his shop it was coated with trewax I use it on my walnut stocks.If one has a walnut stock and it gets scratched buy some Old English Furniture Polish it will cover scatches.I gave my ffl dealer some to use on scratched sks stocks to cover the scratches made them look great,I saw a rifle on ebay(before the ban) that had lots of stock scratches ,contacted the seller about Old English.

Scr83jp....his weapons are not blued, the Remington matte finish on the express is an applied finish not a chemical bluing....if he does not oil it it will rust more then you could imagine and for parkerized weapons the parkerizing needs oil to fill in the pours as that is how it protects the metal. I am sure your adivse would be fine for Blued finishes but not the one being asked about.

This makes me regret purchasing my security 870 from Big 5 and not going with a 870 marine magnum

I just finished cleaning my surface rusted 870 express for the first time too... I am surprised at how quick it rusted as well!

However, it is the first time I put my gun away without oiling the exterior! IMO, just keep it oiled and it should be fine!

I've got the Security in matte blue and keep it wiped down with CLP and stored in a safe with a dehumidifier in it. This method of storage has kept it rust free so far.

At the same time my Marine Magnum is stored separately and handled often without wiping down but I don't worry about it rusting because of the nickel plating.

This is how I got my 870 rust free! Buy a can of Ezzox. Spray the reciever and barrel and let it sit for 10 minutes to dry. Wipe it down, re-apply, final wipe, and you won't see anymore rust! Works like a charm!
