ATF raids for online ammo purchases?

I thought my UPS delivery guy looked a bit shifty today! It was a different driver today. He strategically parked his big brown van to block my driveway (so I couldn't make an escape by car). He went into the back of the truck for over two minutes (probably to fix his "wire" and brief his entry team who were all jammed inside the back of the truck in between the big brown boxes). He calmly walked up to my porch and handed my the package and made me sign his brown video surveillance device masquerading as a scanner computer thingy, to accept the package.

He asked what was in the box because it was so heavy. Thinking fast on my feet and hoping he hadn't noticed the ORM-D sticker, I responded "Baking supplies!" He looked confused and walked away. I guess I foiled the ATF this time, but I know I am only chancing my luck if I continue to order ammo online again.

Now I just need to sit down and pull all the bullets by hand to check they haven't placed a bug inside the ammo.

There are no restrictions in Orange County to order online and have the ammo shipped to you. Some vendors will make you sign for it to verify your age, others will not.

I order almost all of my ammo online.

Some online companies like Sportsmans Guide are working with ATF. They make you sign for your ammo so there will be proof in court that you ordered and received it.

I read an article the other day ( I can't remember the publisher, but I recall it was a somewhat reputable news website) that had a story about a guy that was questioned by DHS for buying a crap load of .223 because it was "used for assault rifles". Scared the crap outta his wife. Then when he convinced the DHS agents he only had bolt-action rifles in .223 they left him alone.

I thought it was odd, but I buy ammo online anyway. I'm not doing anything illegal and I don't plan on it in the future. Assuming the tale was true that guy had to be on some sort of list to begin with- maybe he made some kind of threats online. Either way he claimed they busted in his home over simple online ammo sales. DHS, of course, declined to comment.

OK, found the article. It doesn't give as much info as I recall tho so maybe I read it somewhere else. In this article it's second-hand info tho:

"West said a customer of his recently stocked up on .223-caliber rounds, a caliber often used in assault-style weapons. The customer bought 1,000 rounds a few months ago through a mail order company.

Shortly after the purchase, he received a visit from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, whose interest was apparently piqued by a large-scale purchase of that caliber."

What kind of junior cub reporter would post this kind of unsubstantiated comment? Shouldn't he verify his sources to see if that is even the kind of thing that someone would do in DHS (versus perhaps the ATF)? I'm not a journalist but I would think that you should at least do a cursory sanity check before printing a comment "that some guy" told your source.

.. nevermind. I looked up the Post Star. This small town rag sounds like it's run by two old ladies, the Glen Falls HS journalism class, and maybe a dog.

I've bought a hell of a lot more than 1K rounds at a time online and I've never been visted or questioned.

Most of the people on this forum has bought well over 1000 rounds online and had no issues. The only thing i did not like was the fact the UPS guy just left 1000 rounds in my driveway without even ringing the doorbell one time. I just don't like leaving that lying around all day.
