ATF raids for online ammo purchases?

    Hello everyone,

I just bought my first gun the other day, a 20 gauge mossberg 500. When I went to buy ammo at a local gun store, they were out of the type I wanted, so I told the guy at the counter I'd just buy it online.

He said to me that I shouldn't do that because the ATF is raiding people who buy ammo online. This sounded like a load to me, but I didn't argue--after all, I'm pretty new at this! So is he right? I live in Orange County--does OC have restrictions against online ammo purchases?

    Thanks!

Please post the name of the store who said this so I can call him tomorrow and discuss the difference between a lie and the truth

Welcome to Calguns! Come here whenever you want the real scoop! And no ATF does not raid online ammo sales. Some municipalities have restrictions though. Usually company policies err on the side of caution or misinformation and will not sell to CA in general. I have not heard anything about OC having any such restriction.

I heard that during the ammo shortages, the ATF was raiding hoarders to replenish their duty ammo.

For the last 9 months, all of my internet ammo purchases have been shipped to me hidden inside of Plush Teddy Bears and ceramic roof tiles. You have to stay one step ahead.

                              FUD

There is no issue buying ammo online and it is extremely common. I have bought about 4000 rounds of ammo in various calibers such as from .22, 7.62x39, 7.62x54r, 12 guage, 30-06 ect. in the past 2+ years with no issues. IMO buying ammo is only affordable when you can buy in bulk, and the 2 most common places for that is gun shows and online. Going to a gun store for ammo is like spending 20 dollars on a warranty for a 5 dollar knife.

Here is an example for my Mosin Nagant ammo 7.62x54r from big 5 is a little more than a dollar a round but buying surplus ammo online for 60 dollars i got 440 rounds of ammo or .15 cents a round(this is when ammo was cheaper, IIRC it is like 100 now)
