Good to see this thread still going. I just picked this Ithaca DS from another Calguns member a few weeks ago. I gave it a good cleaning and the action is as slick as snot. I planned on putting wood furniture on it, but the old school Choate stock set is quite sturdy and I may leave it be. The only modification I made was a new Wolff magazine spring.

Naz, a load of birdshot in the face at 10 yards is about as effective as a load of buckshot at the same distance. Where you run into trouble is beyond that.

If that's all you got, don't be afraid of using it. A Rear End full of birdshot from 30 yards away will certainly make a lasting impression on anyone, and shouldn't be discounted in any way as long as you understand that it probably won't kill the guy.

00 Buckshot is a Fight Ender, as are Slugs, and Nothing lives thru a Slug!

Another way to go is to send you barrel to Vang Comp www.vangcomp.com and have them work it over.

My M500's both pattern 00 Buck into 7" at 25 yards. They also both do #8's into 7" at 25 yards.

Something to look into.

I like that synthetic stock that's on there but an OG oiled wood stock would be nice

You are kind of late to the game.

I would recommend that you go to a school first and learn what you would be doing with said shotgun before you go out and buy something that you won't be happy with.

First Off,, You aren't going to find much of anything "Tactical Shotgun" or "any shotgun," this late in the game. The shelves are Empty and will be for the Foreseeable Future.

My Favorite LGS is now only open by "Appointment Only" and is selling 15-20 guns a Day!!! It is slim pickin's and they are selling lots of the less desirable guns that distributors have had on the shelves for a long time, because the MFG's are Swamped and Restricted in MFG Capability by lack of personnel due to Covid.

You are easily the 25th thread posted asking the very same question here in the last 4 months. Just scroll down thru the threads and you'll see plenty. I personally have commented on most of them and tried to steer people to what I consider to be the best options. However I'm done doing that because people buy what they want, and seldom listen to others who disagree with their choices, and don't even know it.

Between Glock 19's, Mossberg or Remington Shotguns, and Complete ARs or parts to build AR's, it is slim pickin's out there.

That said,,, just buying a shotgun and not getting trained with it is a Recipe for Disaster. If you have no experience with guns I'd seriously recommend not going this route. You will be more of a danger to yourself and your family, than to the totally random and sparse threats that the News Media puts forth every night on TV, in an attempt to scare you into voting for Biden and Democrats.

Have you actually seen any mayhem in person in your vacinity? Probably not. I haven't and I actually look for it constantly because my Head is on a Swivel anytime I'm away from home .

Just like Covid It doesn't exist in my Area, and Nobody has died from either problem within 60 miles of where I live.. I don't exactly live in the sticks either.

You could save yourself some money by just learning how to become more aware of your environment and learning how to avoid conflict.. In all cases,,,The Best Defense is "Avoidance"

Now if your Environment is a high risk area,,, then by all means arm up and get trained. The primary point being "GET TRAINED!!!!!" "Any gun will do,,, if you will do!"

I'm looking to buy my first shotgun. The main purpose for it would be home defense. I have been reading about Benelli (ARGO vs pump) and Remington. Looking for reliability, simplicity, durability and quality. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have a Benelli Super NOVA pump and it looks like a decent shotgun. I've bought it with a 26" barrel and purchased another 18" for home defense. It takes around 30 sec. to switch barrels in slow motion. There is an option to install a pistol grip if needed.
As for home defense, in one of videos about weapon handling topics that I watched, the instructor mentioned a shotgun as one of the deadliest at short distances leaving either dead or severely injured at a close distance. The instructor was talking from his special ops experience.

This does not apply to pump action shotguns according to the shotgun flowchart. Telescoping stock + pistol grip is ok on a pump as long as it has the allowable the barrel and total lengths.

LoL, I'm not even sure what my fn tps stock does, it barely reaches the barrel rest in the safe so I never thought of shortening it

since it came from turners that way I assumed the button was defeated like the benelli.. those I believe can be taken apart and returned to stock when in the US.. but same reason I don't bother, it barely reaches the rack in the safe and both have a comfortable lop as is

Bobby, that is a real live Ithaca Police with Original Ithaca Deer Slayer Rifle Sights, Most didn't have sights, and original style wood would be cool ! I bet the barrel has a fixed IC Choke (.715) like all the Deerslayers had. It will be very accurate with slugs and pattern Buckshot much tighter than others.

'Special ops' only uses shotguns for breeching so it's very limited.

IMO, the dudes that have the most experience with deploying shotguns are the LE community.

The handful of LEO I know mentioned their agencies all moved to AR15 (and AR10 for their swat DMR) several years ago, so maybe shotgun is really a breaching tool these days in tactical world?

I had a shooting buddy with a 930. Nothing but issues. Mossberg did their best to fix the gun but after two times back to mossberg, he sold it off and bought a benelli.

I've seen a few others have issues and others run without a problem.

I have a 930 SPX and it has been flawless. Eats everything I feed it, without issue.

In free states, ABSOLUTELY. My shotgun is far down the rung behind my PTR91, Bren 805, and AR's in home defense.

But in CA, when your AR and shotgun might have close to the same number of rounds in 'em... I can see the shotgun taking a higher priority.
