Bird/Buck/Slug what does LE use

I shoot lots of birds with birdshoot. It's not very often that I find a through and through vs. if I were to use buckshot.

If your going to shoot someone to protect your life or your families lives why wouldn't you want the best option to neutralize the threat?

i do want the best option - considering the birds you shoot are probably at a farther distance than an immediate threat would be to me it's something to take into account

what would happen to that bird if you shot it at point blank or say within 10 feet of you - im trying to factor in the condensed spread too resulting from shooting at a much closer range

i do have to admit that the general consensus so far is against using birdshot

Unfortunately I have shot a few at very close range, due to "operator error". While making one side of the breast (or sometimes two) not something I bother to pick or cut out I wouldn't be satisfied with the penetration if I was looking for something to shoot an intruder or attacker with.

Funny side point is I have an actual video of a bird getting up and crossing right in front of me, I pull the trigger when it's less than 30' away and right after the shot I swear at myself for doing that. My wife filmed it from behind me.

Absolute smallest I would recommend is #4 Buck.

Jav's are like 70#, not 270#. I've wiped the head clean off jacks with #5.

I use #4 buck for HD in the shotty. (If I can't get to my AR with 55grain Hornaday TAP rounds).

Similarly, I was hunting with two friends that shot really quick and finally my chance came to shoot first. I was using a .410 and hit the chukar that was about 20' away. There wasn't anything left worth salvaging. There was a breeze and one of the guys was sprayed with a blood mist and he asked if it had started to rain. I told him to look at his shirt and he figured it out.

For clarity's sake...that's #4 Buck (4B).

In before the ubiquitous "let me shoot you in the chest with #8 and see how you like it" (or some such horsepoop argument).

It's funny sometimes. Those who are most concerned about over penetration or penetration of missed pellets are usually the same ones who feel they're gonna land all pellets CofM or headshot. Not many BG's stand there in their wifebeater weighing all of 150# letting you take your best shot.

ok, great - thanks to everyone who took a minute to respond

i went ahead and ordered 10 boxes (50 rounds) of 00 Federal buck shot and i also ordered 6 boxes of Federal #8 birdshot

im going to familiarize myself with both loads, i haven't fired a shotgun in over 20 years, it'll be fun - i'll set aside a couple of boxes of 00 Buck for HD and i'll shoot the rest for the fun of it

With unlimited funds and time, I’m sure I would settle on #1 buck and a bunch of training, but until I’m rich and have tons of time, I load with ‘00’.
I lucked into a deal with the 2 1/4” 6 pellet ‘00’ and I really like it - feels like I’m shooting dove loads - and I get another round in the tube.

Well...I have been shot my #5 shot at effectively zero distance. I could have fought back for a bit if the situation had called for it. My anecdotal experience jives with ballistic gel testing...about 4" penetration. If it had been "buck something" I doubt I would be responding.

#1 buck is the "happy medium" at HD distances.
