Maverick 88 - Pros/Cons

fairly inexpensive 12 gauge im looking to purchase - decent review from Hickok45, wondering if any Calgunners own one - i'd like some feedback on it

strictly gonna be a "for fun" shotgun, no competition, probably spend a good amount of time in my safe, one of the reasons im looking at something that's not high end

looking at an 18.5 in the $225.00 range

Other than that pretty much like the Mossberg 500.

Also won't accept a Surefire fore end light without completely converting it to the 500 setup. Or maybe even won't work then.

The 88 is their bottom of the line shotgun and while it's reliable, it's missing some of the features of the 500....which is missing some of the features of the 590. Etc.

For instance, you can't put a tube extender on either an 88 or a 500.

I have one. 20" barrel.
I installed a 500 heat shield on it. And it's a lot of fun to shoot. I make up shorty slugs and can stuff many extra shells into the tube.
Forend can be changed out, with a bit of effort.
Again, it's an inexpensive shotgun that's loads of fun to shoot.

i get it, and, all im looking for is something reliable - not even HD, but, in the pinch i'd use it in a heartbeat

If there is any way you can put a little more money together and get a nice sporting shotgun, you'll have something nice that you will keep forever.

My bro in law just purchased one. I made him run it with bird, Buck and slugs while I trained him on it. Did just fine. He swapped out the stock for a hogue 12"lop stock like I have on my 590.

I beleive it is a good buy p...makes for a great truck gun
