This is how crappy rumors get started.

Next thing you know, someone is going to say guns have a 'shoulder thing that goes up'.
It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

    The title is....."United States Marine".

but the mossberg 500 doesn't just fall apart..... and if you want a competition gun, you are likely going to not be using a pump action, but a several thousand dollar semi automatic
Only the lower end Mossbergs use the pinned forend rather than the action tube. Any 500 can be upgraded by buying an action tube and forend for it. I have never had any trouble with a 500 plastic trigger guard since I first owned one in 1992.

What a joke. I've put thousands of rounds through mine and it hasn't come close to breaking apart. Never even had a malfunction.

This. My 500 accepted Surefire's for end light without the need to upgrade/change any parts.

And I'm pretty sure the trigger assy is not plastic. Only the guard is plastic.

I have taken several tactical shotgun classes, and I have never seen a 500 fail (except from user error ... short stroking, user-installed crappy accessories, etc.). I use a standard Rem 870 Express Tactical in basically stock configuration, and that hasn't failed either.

The 500 is GTG, as everyone else has said.

Some 590's have plastic trigger guards. The early trigger guards had problems with the ears breaking off, but since Mossberg came out with their reinforced trigger guard some time ago the problem is now a non issue. The biggest difference between the 2 is the 590's have a thicker walled barrel and extended/extendable mag tube as others have already stated. If your looking to get into a pump a 20" 500 with a 8 shot mag tube for 199.00 from Big5 on sale is probably the best bang for your buck.
