Mossberg 500 "break apart" ??

I was at a gun shop yesterday and I heard the salesman explain to a customer why the Mossberg 590a1 is more expensive than the 500 and the salesman claimed he goes to competitions all the time and he sees 500's "break apart" because they are "not designed to fire hundreds of shells like the 590's are"

What say you Calguns? To my knowledge this is FUD because the 500 and 590a1 have the exact same actions, only difference is barrel, metal trigger and metal safety

One of the biggest differences is actually in the magazine tube. 590 has an extendable magazine tube because the tube passes through the barrel strap/band whatever you call it. you can add extensions to it and therefore more rounds in the tube. 500 does not have an extendable tube because the barrel strap dead ends the tube. The only way to extend the 500 is to get a barrel where the barrel strap is closer to the muzzle or get a longer barrel. That's why you're more likely to see 590's at competitions because they can extend the capacity.

but the mossberg 500 doesn't just fall apart..... and if you want a competition gun, you are likely going to not be using a pump action, but a several thousand dollar semi automatic

Ive fired countless shells through my 500 for 20 years with zero malfunctions. Not a single experience of it falling apart.

Horse hooey! Those 500's are built pretty stout. You'd have to be mighty hard on one for one to "break apart". Besides, like jimbo said, you don't use a 500 in competition. That was never their intended use.

the 590A1 is built like a tank for sure but in some ways its over built
there is nothing wrong with the 500

My understanding is the military uses Mossberg.

For those of you with experience, would you say the 590a1 is worth the cost over a 500 if you intend to use it in tacticle shotgun classes or would the 500 do fine? Do you guys feel less recoil with the heavier 590a1 ?

I have a 590a1, both should do just fine for a tactical shotgun class. The a1 variant weighs more as you already know, so your arms will be very tired at the end of a long day of shooting. I would equate my 590a1 recoil to that of a mosin nagant (30cal milsurp rifle, weighs significantly less)

owned a 500 since 1993 . it has shot dam near 8,000 rounds.

extractors were the only thing replaced.

Yes. There are couple reasons. The 590A1 has a metal trigger group. I have never had problem with a plastic trigger group, since my first 500 in '92, but the metal group is more stout. Also, the 590 holds one more shot than the 7+1 500. Also, the mag tube can be extended out to more rounds, should you choose to. The 500 can not.
