    Is slam fire legal?

I have an 870 and I was wondering if i modified the trigger action so that when I held the trigger down and then pumped the slide, cycling the action, and it fired, so I basically hold the trigger down and keep cycling the action that it keeps firing, would that be legal? Of would I be manufacturing a machine gun? Sorry if I got the terminology wrong or if this is a dumb question, just been wondering about it for a while. If that doesnt make sense you hold the trigger down and keep pumping action and it fires till its empty... I guess some police issue guns come standard like this. Just wondering if its legal for average joe me. No special licenses of California special anything

    Yes it is legal.
IMO its a stupid thing to do though because you are modifying the stock trigger group to function in a manner that the manufacturere expressly designed it not to do. Its also not the safest thing in the world to do either. It is possible to get an out of battery discharge that will really ruin your day.

NO LE 870 was sold with this feature expressly placed in the shotgun. Some onlder ones will due it from excessive wear from my experience. These are usually taken out of inventory or repaired due to possible legal ramifications if a neglegent discharge were to occur

      Why would you want to?

Legal aspects aside, all I see are problems arising from that. I would call that kind of modification an accident waiting to happen.

Im not sure if its legal or not, but I sure as hell wouldnt do it either way.

      Happy thanksgiving!

I have to agree, the Ithaca model 37 does this stock.

Legal or not, DO NOT modify your 870 to do this. It can create a very dangerous situation.

Not all 37's will do it. The newest 37's will not slam fire.

The ones I have do, they are from the 1930's and 1940's. Also winchester model 97's do it as well. I don't know if all model 12's slam fire.

I was curious. I have two Ithaca model 37's that will slam fire, but a friend of mine has a model 37 that will not slam fire. His is later production, 70's I'd guess...

Ithaca started putting disconnectors on the M37 around '74-75, but would still make them w/o the disconnectors for LE. These days there's tons of post-'75 disconnector-less M37s around in general circulation.

So the guns that were designed to slam fire are also engineered with an additional component that won't let the hammer fall untill the bolt is fully in battery? I was thinking it'd be cool to design something like that too. I don't have any of the tools to do this work... it was just something thats been floating around my head for a while

Get an 11-87 instead. Fire as fast as you can aim with a whole lot less motion; you don't even need two working arms. And it's actually safe.
