Need a LA area Beginner Trap Instructor

Hi All

I want to give trap shooting one more attempt before I throw in the towel so I am in search of an instructor who possesses a zen like patience. Seriously, I'm not remedial, or even Remedial, I am REMEDIAL when it comes to being able to break clay. I know there are many instructors in the Los Angeles area so any help in narrowing the field would be appreciated.

Whatever the case, don't give up, because you'll get it eventually. Just curious, but have people been telling you to entirely ignore the bead and that your gun will "shoot exactly where you look"? Because that's bull****. Here's my favorite analogy these clowns use: "You don't look at the bat when swinging at a baseball, do ya?" Of course not, the bat isn't in front of your face with your cheek up against it. Derp. If the gun shot exactly where we looked then nobody would ever miss unless you were blind. Yes, the gun must fit so that your eye lines up with the rib so don't overlook that. You must use the bead in your peripheral vision, or cover the bird with the barrel and shoot. Even the ISSF website tells you this. Your brain needs a visual cue to tell you when to pull the trigger. PERIOD. Please, do NOT listen to those folks. They are just repeating crap that everybody spews as gospel. Next time somebody says this crap, ask them this: Which method of lead do you prefer to use on most crossers? If they aren't seeing the barrel, then how do they know?

Brad (ysr_racer) is the man to talk too. Im sure that even if he can't help you, he will know someone who can. If you were in San Jose or the Bay Area I could give you a list of guys, but I don't know anyone in SoCal

You can also ask the counter at ranges that specializes in clay shooting, most of them will know of, or have on staff, professionals who can help you with it.

When you ask about price, be sure to also ask if the price includes target. One fella I know got a price shock because the trainer quote him a price but wasn't clear with him that clay targets are extra.

Also, ask the trainer if it'll help if you bring along Winchester AA Traacker shot shells. I found them useful when teaching my wife how to shoot trap, they show the trainer where the shots are going with the aerodynamic wad that follows the pad of the shot.

I guess I'm one of those clowns because once the front bead fell off my shotgun I won my class at the CA State Sporting Championship. Are you saying if I had the front bead on I could have won HOA?

Yes - start with the So Cal Shotgun/Skeet clinic that is highlighted in two stickies at the top of this (Shotguns) forum. One sticky has the pertinent info, the other is the current schedule of clinics and sign up.

NOTE: The only way to sign up is to send a PM to Captain Richard - leaving a post saying you want a certain clinic spot WILL NOT sign you up.

These semi-private clinics are expert and effective instruction for a small fraction of what you'd pay for similar instruction everywhere else. And though they are not the end-all in instruction (as you will probably want more advanced, and more game-specific, instruction at some point) they are the BEST way to learn the fundamentals that apply to all the clay sports.

If you lock the trap machine to throw a fixed angle, it'll be just like sporting clay, except easier.
