My wife has the little Ruger SR22 and she really likes it alot. She usually only shoots Federal Bulk, but it has been reliable for a couple years now. It is rather small if you have larger hands like me. So I shoot it seldom. Fun little plinker though. It is not ammo finicky as some others seem to be. Shoots the cheap bulk stuff of any velocity and brand well. It even shoots CCI standard velocity's (1050 FPS) fine and cycles well. No need for the hyper velocity stuff with the SR22

I also have a Buckmark and would take that over a similar Ruger model any day. It appears you are looking for something more similar to a P22 and the Ruger SR22 anyway.

I shot the 22/45 and didn't like it as much as expected. I prefer the MkIII or the Buckmark. For a range toy, those would be my first choice.

I've shot the SR-22 and liked it. It was a rental, but it was still fresh enough that it wasn't sloppy and I liked the feel and function. About as accurate as I'd expect for a small pistol and I'd probably consider picking one up myself if not the P22.

Another vote for a base model Buckmark, they are excellent guns and easy to operate for new shooters.

Love my MkIII 22/45. Extremely reliable and way more accurate than I am.

I know I'm going to get some flack for this, but I've been using a Sig Mosquito for new shooters. As Long as I feed it CCI Mini-Mags, it runs great; anything else, even Blazers which are supposed to be the same except for the copper plating, and it's a no-go.

The transition to the P226 is very easy since the controls, except for the safety, are the same.

Why would anyone not buy a Ruger for their first 'solid' .22?

                    MK's or 22/45's. Can't go wrong.

                    2nd would be a S&W 22A or a Buckmark.

What's something that's going to go bang every single time that I can use to teach newbies to shoot with? I know there's the MK3, but that's even more expensive.

I'd like something along those lines though so that it's easier for new shooters to transition from a .22 handgun to a 9mm at the range. Currently I've just been borrowing a friend's Walther P22 when we take new shooters, but I'd like something of my own.

I've got two Mosquitos and have never had a problem with either. I keep them clean and shoot CCI Mini Mags. Totally agree that it's a great platform to transition to the P226 or P229.

I also have a Ruger SR22. It feels cheaper than the Mosquitos and the trigger doesn't feel great, but it gobbles up a wider variety of ammo. It does feel smaller than the Mosquito, but the size is OK for me.

plus one on the Mosquito. I've never had any issues with mine. It loves CCI blazers, Federal bulk and MiniMags. only reason its for sale is to support my CZ craze.. :d

Easily 6K + rounds through my MKIII Hunter. It eats just about anything, just like my 10/22, and everyone loves to shoot it. Can't go wrong!

My son shot a buckmark with a red dot on it and loved it. Thanks to the guy at sac valley that offered it up. I couldn't find one and it was a little more expensive than the Ruger 22/45 target model I picked up. I put a hiviz front sight on and painted the rear sight. With the ultimate clip loader, it's a lot of fun to shoot. PITA to clean and take apart.
