10/22 vs 10/22 takedown

Own both.Bought the takedown on impulse.Takedown is as reliable as my 30+ year old 10-22.
Tested it for function with several types of ammo.Almost boring as far as reliability.Accuracy with iron sights was no different.
All of my test firing was with factory 10 round magazines.IMHO these are the gold standard for a 10-22. -

Just wondering to myself, does anyone make solid copper 22LR ammo?
I see, yes, they do. Federal does.Comment

Are you gonna take the rifle down so you can store or carry it in a backpack? If not then you're probably better off with the standard 10/22 and use the money you save to buy a different stock or maybe a scope or other accessories.**WTB: FNS-9, P07 or P09, Steyr M9A1, Canik Shark FC or Stingray. PM me w/offers**Comment

If you're looking for a compact rifle that is reliable and accurate, the Takedown is a good choice. I shot two Rifleman scores in its stock configuration at an Appleseed event I attended. I eventually put an Underfolder Stock on mine. I had the barrel cut and threaded down to 16.25 inches while still keeping the front site. It now fits in a large handgun soft case(with scope attached).Talk about compact! With this conversion I threaded on a Yankee Hill Machine 5C2 flash hider to meet the California OAL requirement. Comes in at 26.125 inches with the stock folded. I plan to attend another Appleseed with it to see how it compares to the stock setup.Last edited by Prospector1; 03-12-2014, 6:46 PM.Comment

Have both and accuracy is the same. A kinda think the tolerances on the takedown could have been tighter. The gap is not subtle.
If you need compact, go for it, if not I agree with others and just get the regular one and play dress up with accessories.Comment

I have both. I usually shoot my take down, why? Because it is so easy to clean. One cannot clean a stock 10-22 from the rear without removing from the stock, dissassemble and drill a hole or remove the barrel to allow the cleaning rod to enter. You do not have to be crazy to hang out with me. I'll train you!Comment

I have both, and honestly either one will get the job done. A few major things to consider are.....
- the TD is obviously more portable and easier to transport & carry around
- the standard carbine is much more customizable with more stocks & barrels available for it
- the standard carbine is cheaper
Sure you can make other stocks and bull barrels fit onto a TD, but right now it's going to cost quite a bit to have them machined (unless you do all the work yourself). There's also the issue that no barrel on a TD will be free floating, if that's really a concern for you.
So really, it depends on what you really want out of the 10/22, what your plans are for it, and how much you're willing to spend. Even with a cheap $199 10/22 carbine, you can easily spend $500-$600 in the end with a new stock, new bull barrel, and new scope.Comment

If I'm backpacking with a 22LR rifle, I would just keep it bagged and strapped to the outside of my backpack, until I go out rabbit hunting at dusk, when the rabbits come out. No real need for a take-down rifle for a backpack trip.
Want to try raccoon sometime too. But they always come out after midnight, seems like. And I don't want to wake the entire backpack camp with a shot in the middle of the night.
I normally wear my 45ACP in a shoulder holster for backpacking. Not very good for game getting, but great for warding off 2 legged predators. There have actually been two occasions when it came in handy in a campsite regarding unwanted campsite intruders. Be safe.Last edited by hks95134; 03-13-2014, 10:14 AM.Comment

I didn't know this was legal to do, is it really?
Sorry for the threadjack - I was interested in a 10/22 takedown, but was turned away when a friend told me he was having problems shooting Federal Champions and a couple of other brands (can't remember) with it. The comments on this thread help me reconsider.
