    question for left handed shooters

going to be taking my daughter out to shoot her cricket i bought her for doing good in school, shes 6. i'm a right handed shooter she is left hand dominant, this will be her first time shooting. is there any advice you can give to help me out in helping her shoot.i noticed when we went over safety and function of the cricket with her at the house with snap caps she was more comfortable looking down the iron sites with her right eye. should i have her focus on using her left eye since shes a lefty? thanks for any help.

Have you tried the eye dominance test yet? It's easy, look it up online.

I'm left handed and left eye dominant, so I'm lucky. Generally, it's easier to teach someone who's cross-dominant to shoot rifles with their dominant eye. Since she's new to shooting, tgis shouldn't be difficult.

It's the eye dominance that's key. My wife is left eye dominant and I had to duplicate all my rifles in LH versions for her to shoot.

Give her the looking through a triangle made with your hands test ASAP

I would recommend which ever eye is dominant, to train her to hold the rifle so that eye is used for sighting. Since she is a new shooter, she has not developed any habits or muscle memory. I am left handed, and I was taught to shoot a bow right handed. I have developed the habit and muscle memory that it would be foreign for me to try to retrain holding the bow differently.

I am left eye dominant and shoot right handed. With the long guns I sight with my right eye with no problem. However I was having trouble shooting pistol with right eye/right hand. After a week of shooting the pistol every day I started holding the pistol with the left hand on the grip, wrap the right hand over, use the right hand finger to pull the trigger and use the left eye to sight.
For me this is producing the best results. I am using a pencil barrel Ruger Mark II, now I have to try this with my J-Frame .357 Colt and see how it comes out. Who knew it could be this complicated.

Have her shoulder the rifle both

ways, and ask her which one is more comfortable: which one does she see the target over the sights better with.

Watch her, be mindful of which eye she is looking over the sights with. When her cheek is resting on the stock, make sure when she shoulders lefty that she is looking down the sights with her left eye...and vice versa for righty.

Kudos for getting her out shooting...have fun!

                            Me too.

Kind of. I shoot handguns with both hands. Some better left handed and some better right handed.
                            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

She's young, so she may not have the coordination to shoot off-hand at this point or may not understand why her body refuses to just keep the rifle on one side, but a cross-eye-dominant shooter has three choices:

1: shoot on the eye-dominant side
2: train yourself to shoot on the hand-dominant side and use the "bad" eye
3: close the strong eye and shoot on the strong side

For a kid, I'd think #3 would be the easiest.

The cricket is bolt-action, so she'll have to be careful not to bonk herself with the bolt, but I know as a kid I was VERY left-handed, it was tough to do anything right-handed...

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.
