Most modern PCP (pre charged pneumatic) are shooting sub sonic (around 900fps). Depending on the weight of the pellet you can get upwards of 250FPE, that's enough to do some serious kinetic damage.
Something that I personally think should be made clear. Most firearms relay on Hydrostatic damage to create a much larger wound channel than the projectile. This is what makes ethical and sometimes near instant kills. Pellet guns relay on penetration and "perfect" shot placement, much like an arrow without a broadhead. Penetration, must hit a vital and even then death is usually slower.

In my experience/believe, PCP like guns calibers:

-.177 good for softer skin squires, rats and small birds.

-.22 add in large birds like Ravins, very small predictors and further distance. (Note many 22 pellets have a better BC velocity combo for better long distance hits than do most 25cal pellets.

-25 add in up to Coyotte's at close range.

.357 -.50 - sure people do hunt close range small domestic type feral hogs.. But Anything larger gets into the issue of ethics for me...

I have had all these calibers but the .50

Actually, the larger bore airguns are becoming mainstream and are no longer just a hybrid.

      FX Boss - .30 caliber
      Daystate Wolverine - .303 caliber
Airforce Condor - .25 caliber (I wouldn't be surprised to see a .30 caliber from them soon)
      Evanix Rainstorm - 9mm/.357 caliber
Sam Yang Recluse - .357 caliber
Sam Yang Big Bore - .45 caliber
Sam Yang Dragon Claw - .50 caliber

These are all available from some of the major airgun dealers on the net and range from $700 to $2700. Being that my Daystate Huntsman XL was around $1200, these prices are not out of the ordinary for serious airgunners.

Diver160651 - FYI - Ravens are illegal to shoot.

Exactly. There are a lot of options that are hardly a rarity these days, as long as you expand your browsing beyond the local chain sporting goods store(which would be why I mentioned things existing beyond the local Big 5 sporting goods).

It really depends on your goals. Just as an example, here is my extremely fast and rough brake-out.

-For training to match long distance shooting off bipod - your want to make sure your choice is bipod capable. (Most brake actions are a poor choice for this but Pyramid Air does have a model that has a bipod and is said to be the best value in a gas brake action - http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Hatsan...NPSS_Camo/2783)

-If you add in accuracy to the above or are generally concerned about accuracy, PCP or non break action rifles are the best, below supper sonic velocities. This is about the best value, but add in a pump, bipod magazines, scope base and quality scope and you are at or over $1K- http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Benjam...tic_Stock/3139

-for hunting 22 cal and above- tailored to your targets.

-for longer distance target many 22 pellets have better BC's than 25 etc

-if your concerned about stealth and noise consider a a subsonic baffled PCP, like the Marauder above.

            - if general fun and budget is a concern and your not worried about accuracy most of the brake action guns work.

-for the same with a bit less noise, think nitro-piston again subsonic.
Just about all of them are close.

            - If you only concerned about pellet availability get a 177

            - Shooting indoor matches - your going to get a very, very slow .177 for big $$

            My 2cents--

I noticed in the air guns there is a lot of break barrel single shot models---I can't quite see how anyone would have the patience to, stop, break the barrel. and then fish for a tiny little pellet to insert, close, fire and then repeat---The whole process seems sooooooo slow. ( and maybe a bit boring? )

^I'm imagining a follow up shot in that scenario. But if I'm just out plinking it wouldn't bother me.

                  Here's a boring day with my Beeman R9 in .20 caliber :

Once you get used to it, the entire process becomes like second nature.

                  I do like PCP's though!!

They make pellet pens that act as a dispenser, so no fishing around for pellets. Shooting prone they still are a pain in the ... But walking around the pellet pens make fishing for a pellet a thing of the past brake barrel push on end of pen to load directly into chamber. --- still love the PCP magazine and bolt action though

Returning to your original question, OP, I think the simplest answer is that a .22 can easily kill or seriously injure someone whereas a pellet gun is highly unlikely to do either.

Have deaths and serious injuries occurred from the (mis)use of such guns? Yes, but your chances of having a lethal accident with a pellet gun are far less. Thus, one receives greater legislative scrutiny than the other.

When I was a teenager I was shot in the leg with a pellet gun and it stung like crazy and bled. Frankly, it hurt much more than I thought it would. If that had been a .22, however, I would have been hospitalized or could have bled to death.

I am aware that there are some very high powered air guns in .357 and .45 which can take down large game, but I assume your question pertains to what most of us commonly refer to as "pellet guns". That is, guns that shoot a light weight pellet and are widely available at most sporting goods stores and big retailers. The danger of a fatality resulting from the use of one of the guns is very low, hence the distinction.
