err I mean I don't think that you can go wrong with a CZ or if you can find one an older Marlin 39a.
there are many decent other options out there be it a 10/22, model 60, the many different Savages - though were it me I would go with the CZ or the Marlin simply because those two options are something that I would look at handing down the the 7 year old... eventually, not saying that you can't do the same with the other options though.

"This old warhorse started life at the Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) in Birmingham England in 1915 as Sht LE III* in .303. To fulfill a need for a military trainer to best simulate the standard infantry weapon used during WWI the War Office decided to convert existing weapons. Parker Hale in Birmingham England were contracted to perform this conversion from .303 to .22 LR during WW I. Parker Hale sleeved the barrel to .22 LR caliber The knox form carries the original serial numbers and the Parker Hale company logo. The bolt and nose cap have identical serial numbers. The internal parts of the magazine were removed as part of the conversion and used to catch the spent casings.
It has an excellent bore, original canvas sling. The English Walnut stock has no cracks or major dings. The rear hand guard has the standard reinforcing insert. The heel of the butt stock has an arsenal repair that is so well done that it is difficult to see it. The butt stock has a brass disc marked 1 War over 51 or 57. Research indicates this to be most probably from the Warwickshire Regiment in England. The number may be just a rack number or inventory number. Spent today humping round my only .22 rifle. It's a .22 conversion of a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk3 and weighs a ton.

For a 7 year old, I'd recommend a rifle that FITS him. Look at the Savage Rascal or a 10-22 with a youth stock. If you get him a regular 10-22, find a take off wood stock and cut it down to fit him now.

I spent a few minutes on gunbroker.com and found a rifle I never even knew existed. Ruger 96. It looks like a 10/22 but it's a lever action. I am quite taken by it. Are they any good???

I've been looking locally for years for one of those 96s. For your kid, a bolt gun. Since you're a collector, firearms in general, are probably familiar mechanisms to your boy/girl, so maybe something a liitle different or extremely accurate, Browning T-Bolt or Mossy M44 or other US marked trainer. That way you're adding to your C&R stash too. You can always go the single-shot-buy-your-own-ammo, route (here's your rifle, earn your ammo). PAX

My 2 cents?
At seven I was still on a daisy bb gun.
Sometime around 10 Dad started me with a nice simple bolt action 22.
I followed suit with my girls, around 10-12 they got single shot bolt actions.
First a 50$ colt, Coltiare (sp?) has a bright high vanadium bolt, the second (for another $50) a Remington Target something or other.
Both are sleak, light, accurate, and of course stone axe reliable.
Nothing fancy, easy to train with and track what you're doing.

Marlin 60 tube fed or the magazine fed version the Marlin 795.

Marlin also makes a lever action the 39A that is much nicer (especially the older ones) then the Henry
And also a bolt action the Marlin XT-22 (also comes in a youth size)
