.22LR advice

I found buying a Chipmunk single shot 22LR for training my kids the right firearm. Perfect kid size and safe.

Love it! Got my little ones started with a Crickett. I shoot it quite a bit too. It's pretty accurate for what it is. Wouldn't be a bad backpack/gopher gun and they are dirt cheap.

My suggestion would be the 10/22. For ME, and your reasons will be different, I like the semi-auto option so that negates a bolt action or lever action. The Ruger has mags readily available and they can be loaded rather quickly. You can get the Gator tri-mag that will hold 3 mags together and that means lots of shooting prior to reloading. Tube feed magazines can be a pain to reload and you can't easily carry an extra tube magazine or two.

Now if teaching a young one to shoot, I would get the bolt action. I learned to shoot with a single shot bolt action Sears .22 using .22shorts. Sometimes my dad got the .22 longs and on occasion .22LR!

Just my 2 opinion. That and a a buck ninety eight will get you a cup of coffee.

CZ 452 Ultra Lux

My vote is for the CZ 452 Ultra Lux.

It's $366.10 from Grab-A-Gun. With sales tax and your local FFL fee, you should be out the door for ~$460.00.

I added some Tech-Sights ($69.00) to mine, and that's what my Goddaughter and her sisters are using to shoot the Winchester/NRA Rimfire Rifle Qualification.

Sure, you can get the 10/22 for less money (until you start adding things to it like a recoil buffer, auto bolt release, trigger, barrel, etc.), but your 7 year old will not out grow the rifle (nor will you), and you will have a blast shooting it too.

Spent today humping round my only .22 rifle. It's a .22 conversion of a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk3 and weighs a ton. So I decided I need a new 22 for plinking / gophering. Deciding between a Henry lever action, a CZ bolt action and a 10/22 semi auto. Will be carrying it about, will be using iron sights and will also use it to teach my 7 years old how to shoot. Maybe I've missed another obvious option????? Recommendations??????

I have a 10/22.

I recently decided to turn it into a Liberty Training Rifle to do the Appleseed Project with.

So far, I've done the following to it:
- Volquartsen Trigger Job about $35
- Added Tech Sites about $60
- Added swivels and sling about $20

After my son and I do the Appleseed I think I'll replace the barrel and stock.

Anyway, I think the point I'm trying to make is that it's a great rifle platform and can be tweaked easily to become whatever you need it to be.

I love my Henry.
If it came down to it, my buddy's 10/22 is slightly more accurate, but when the group of us go out the H004 gets shot more 5-1 every time.
I guess it's just because it's such a fun rifle to plink with.
It's easy to take down, runs just fine dirty, and holds 16!




I modified the stock semi buckhorn rear sight to a little "peep" out of a tuna can and a sharpie. Add a little dab of the girlfriend's sparkly pink nail polish on the brass front bead and it all works great and lines up quick.

If you can afford one, the browning semi-auto 22 take down is incredible. Designed by JMB himself, light,accurate, extremely reliable and the take down system is inspired. It can be broken down repeatedly and remain tight. After many dissassemblies, if it starts to loosen up, just one click of the adjustment ring will have her tight again. A new one goes for $850, a used one is usually $600 but deals can be had. My dad picked one up for $100!! I got it from him for free!

I have all three, plus the Marlin 60. For spraying lead I go to the semi's and the Henry. For accuracy I go to the CZ.

I have both a Marlin 795 and XT-22. Both rifles in Boyd stocks and could not be more pleased with these. Both are great shooters and the magazines work with either gun.
I do find myself shooting the XT-22 almost exclusively though.

I would recommend the CZ 452 Scout as you want to teach your son to shoot. Excellent accuracy, fit and finish and good iron sights. Small enough for your son and a great carry around rifle. Did I mention accuracy. It will out shout a 10/22 and a Henry. Second would be a Henry, either the base HOO1 or the H001Y for a light, pretty accurate and well made rifle backed by the best warranty in the business. Henry Customer Service is unbeatable. I own a Henry Frontier with a Tang Sight, great combination for plinking and not very picky about ammo.

CZ 452 UltraLux is one of the great rifles out there but with a 28.5" barrel it would not be my choice for a carry around rifle. I own one, will never sell it but for your purposes I think its the wrong choice. Get a scout for your son and a UL for yourself. Can't do better than a CZ for the $$$.

I prefer the 10/22 but I'll throw out some other ideas (already mentioned).

For a semi auto, the Marlin is a good alternative. The Marlin 60 is the tube feed and I think its the 795 is the mag fed. They are smaller/trimmer than the 10/22 and that might be better for your 7 yr old. But that is just a "might".

For a bolt, the Ruger American is a good alternative. Its' mag is the same as the Ruger 10/22. This is the route I would take.... actually... I did take.


Keep in mind, just because its a semi auto doesnt mean that your son will be spraying lead down range. Teach the kid not to! And you DO have the option of only load 1 round at a time as opposed to buying a single shot and only have the ability to load 1 round. A single shot wont be able to grow with your son.

I lugged around an old full size Remington bolt action quite a bit when I was 7-8 through forests. I'm not a big guy so your kid should be able to handle any of those listed especially at a range where theres not much walking.
