.22LR advice

Spent today humping round my only .22 rifle. It's a .22 conversion of a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk3 and weighs a ton. So I decided I need a new 22 for plinking / gophering. Deciding between a Henry lever action, a CZ bolt action and a 10/22 semi auto. Will be carrying it about, will be using iron sights and will also use it to teach my 7 years old how to shoot. Maybe I've missed another obvious option????? Recommendations??????

Marlin 60 tube fed or the magazine fed version the Marlin 795.

Marlin also makes a lever action the 39A that is much nicer (especially the older ones) then the Henry
And also a bolt action the Marlin XT-22 (also comes in a youth size)

can't go wrong with a 10/22. I don't own one, but i've heard nothing but good things about them. I will probably pick one up at some point.

that being said, i really love my lever action henry. it's nothing special, their bottom of the line standard henry .22. I think, especially when teaching someone to shoot, that the lever makes you think about each shot before you send it down range...it's easier to fire off a bunch of shots on a semi-auto. imho

A 10/22 and then a Ruger American Rimfire bolt-action using the same magazines, or maybe get the bolt gun first.

If the priority was teaching on a NEW rifle, I'd probably get the bolt-action first assuming it wouldn't be too redundant with your Enfield.

When I get one I probably won't change a thing... unlike the 10/22 which I'd change the trigger and add a mag release immediately - probably swap out the barrel later. The bolt gun would be much cheaper to shoot accurately especially if you are just going to stick with open sights.

Good advice chaps thank you. I think if learning to shoot having a manually operated rifle with irons might be best rather than having the option of pouring lead down range. Will look at the ruger american, but like the idea of a lever too.

I spent a few minutes on gunbroker.com and found a rifle I never even knew existed. Ruger 96. It looks like a 10/22 but it's a lever action. I am quite taken by it. Are they any good???

10/22 or henry, both are awesome, fun to shoot, accurate enough right out of the box, and very reliable. I'd give the edge to the ruger. Either would be a great choice. But if I could I'd add the marlin 795 in your options. Never had one, but I love all my other marlin rifles and heard nothing but good things about the 795.

I've got the marlin m60 and Henry h001, I like them both.
The ruger 10/22 is a nice gun but your stuck with using ten round mags and having to carry/load the darn things more then shooting your gun.
With either my m60 or h001 being tube feed, the mag is always on the gun and both of mine hold about eighteen rounds of .22 long rifle. Both are allot faster to reload and bigger capacity so no 10/22 for me.

Perfectly happy with my Henry H001 and my Marlin XT-22. I have a Crickett in jail and can't wait to test it out with my kids.

Also really happy with my M&P 15-22, although it's very easy to blow through ammo with it. compared to the Henry or Marlin.

The Henry has good capacity, good trigger, lightweight, accurate, and made in the USA.
