Don't shop at LGS or gun shows for ammo. For now, stick to finding the ammo online. It's there but you have to be quick. I buy my ammo online for .05 - .07 per round and usually sell extra ammo for .08 per round here in the marketplace. If you're paying more than .10 per round, you're doing it wrong.

i'm thinking very hard about getting a new rifle (.223 vs .22lr). really excited about the M&P15-22, but looking around at the LGS near me (LA), I haven't seen any 22lr ammo in stock. And the ammo i've seen is in the neighborhood of 15 cents a round. Compared to the bigger bang of a 30 cent round for a .223, the 22lr is starting to look like it's really not worth it.

Check the rimfire ammo finds thread. I got over 16K rounds last month alone. Great resource.

I think every one needs a good .22 rifle and pistol.

That being said, I stopped shooting my .22 for awhile, right now I have way more .223/5.56 than .22 and .223 is easy to find for $8-9 a box.
The last dozen or so boxes of 100 rnd CCI mini mags I bought have $7 price tags on them. Still have some 20 yr old bricks of 500 too. But I'm waiting until the CCI is a little easier to find.

Even good .22lr is still under half the cost of junk .223(maybe not if you're reloading, but even that's still not gonna be as cheap as .22lr), and bulk .22lr is still dirt cheap by comparison.

Unless there's a reason you need the power(competition, hunting, defense, etc.), if you can get past the ****s and giggles of making noise, it's nice to not have the muzzle flash, noise, blast, cost, etc. while simply shooting at targets. Even today you can still get a .22lr rifle, ammo, and pay for an appleseed class(decent weekend of learning) for less than the cost of most centerfire rifles, nevermind the cost of .223 for the trigger time spent at such a class.

I love to end my shooting day with an hour long session with my bolt action .22 with iron peep sights.
I find it very relaxing and rewarding to finish off all the targets that are still standing at my leisure.

Yes it's absolutely still worth it.

For the most part ammo is back. I'll admit that 22 is still hard to find but it's just a matter of time. Prices are coming down.

Guns are back, even AR's are plentiful.

I love .22's. I have a marlin 795 and its so much fun to shoot. With that said I dont think its worth it at this time due to the lack of ammo. A couple of cents more and I'm shooting .223, 7.62, 12g, 9mm. Once .22 ammo is available again I will start shooting it again.
