Hi guys! I finally bought my first gun, a Ruger 10/22. Now how should I go about buying ammo?

Keep an eye on this thread and the sales/deals section in the marketplace subforum. If you get lucky, you might find some at a reasonable price. If you are desperate, go to the ammo classifieds.

.22s can be finicky about ammo, especially for the first 500 rounds. If you can score some CCI Mini Mags those are *usually* really good to get through the breakin period. Natchez has been getting them in on and off so you might sign up for their email notification although the posts here can be hours earlier!

I had backordered the M*22 1k box at Cabelas, who emailed me to notify that a new shipment will be in on the 25th (tentative) of this month.

Don't get too excited. I have something that's been bumped to the 25th of the month every month since I ordered it in November.

Is this "something" .22 ammunition that you guys have had on back-order for this long?

They just shipped some CCI Segmented I had on order since Dec/Jan, somewhere in there. The thing from November is a cap and ball revolver. Lord knows what's holding it up. Nobody else seems to have any either, so it's probably a production issue, but the point is that Cabelas never moves it to "hell if we know" they move it to 4 weeks, then 3, then 2, then 1, then 0-1, then "backordered" for a couple of days, then I get an email saying it's expected the 25th of the month after and it moves back to 4 weeks.

What are people paying, per round, for their online 22lr ammo purchases. The best I can do is a little over 8 cents.

Depends on what it is. As an example I picked up some of the recent Natchez CCI stuff because I was able to get some stingers and velocitors which were always kind of expensive and hard to find and I'd like to stock up while they can still be mail ordered at all. Total cost with all types was around 13/round. The SK Magazine was a little over 9 cents but that's very good ammo despite being bulk packed. Actual bulk ammo sometimes you can get more like 5 cents if you get lucky.

For just random mid-grade .22 I think most people are using 10 cents including shipping as a threshold.

It's the shipping that kills a 'good' deal these days. That and the maximum low limits most retailers are setting.

You might find a box that calculates to .08 per round, but add on shipping with a 1 box limit and that can quickly become .12 per round or more.

I think .10 a round after shipping is good and anything less is great.....online that is and yes as Eljay mentioned it certainly depends on the type/quality of ammo.

Personally I'm happy getting the cheapest crap I can find!
