hello my fellow Savage 64 owner. I have a 6x24 on my AR15 and I just love to zoom in on my target so I ended up getting the same for my Savage. And 50 yards for the Savage is no challenge with any scope so you mind as have some extra magnification for a 100 yard target.

A 40mm or larger scope looks ridiculous on a little 22, IMO. I have a small Leupold 1-4x20mm on one rifle and Nikon 2-7x32mm on another. Those are plenty of scope for the little 22 caliber. Anything larger just adds weight and is ungainly for anything but target shooting from a bench rest (but that's boring).
My other three .22 rifles have the Williams peep sight on them, two with the front firesight and one with a gold bead. Scopes are fun, but peep sights are my favorite because they're fast, adds no weight and can hit anything out to 100 yards."If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns" - Edward AbbeyComment

Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 on a 25 MOA base. I have to back down my magnification all the way to 6 crank all my elevation and use a lot of hold over to get out to 300 yards with it. I have just enough adjustment to be able to dial 200 yards without using hold overs. Quality is very important if you are going to shoot longer distances.Comment

Go to natchezss.com and look at the truglo infinity scopes for $69.99. They are a 6-24x44 with a fine target crosshair and are a great .22lr scope with an adjustable objective from 15 yards to infinity. I use them on anything from an AR to my .17hmr and they've held up to a lot of abuse for the money. They also have mil-dot but I don't like using that for smallbore.Comment

I have a 4-16 on my Savage 93FVSS.Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.Comment

Nonsense. I have a 4x40 scope on my 10/22 and it's just about perfect for general use - not so much magnification that it's irritating while standing but it lets me see what I'm shooting at 100.Comment

For straight target work i like the weaver t36 , for hunting with a 22 I would go with varible 4-12xao. On all my scopes i like to have a adjustable objectiveComment

Cannoneer is on point.
I shoot competition with a .22 in smallbore prone matches with an Anschutz 2013, and I use a fixed 24X Leupold scope and some competitiors use a 36X. The rifle is accurate enough that the magnification facilitates making more precise shots. In smallbore prone competition, the shooting position is fixed and very steady and the target is also fixed. Using 24X with a shooting coat on, my heart beat makes the crosshairs dance up and down through the 10 ring.
My field rifle is an Anschutz Sporter model 54 and I use a Leupold variable scope, 4.5 X 14 40mm. That has worked out very well for me for many years. Again the rifle is very accurate, which justifies having a good quality scope with higher magnification.
I mounted a Leupold M8 2.5X on my daughter's cricket .22. She can hit anything within 50 yards with that rifle-scope combination.sigpicComment
