    My old Sears 22 sports a 2-7 Leupy, my Sav Mk II precision rifle has a Nikon 6-18X40.
    I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

    As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

      It depends on the rifle, it's use and the shooter's ability. While I prefer irons for many guns, I've had a 6.5-20X scope on the .22 I built for metalic silhoutte since 1986. Other rimfire rifles have irons, 1X red dots, 4x, 4-12X, etc.

        Is 3-9x40 not enough for silhouette? I am getting my first 10/22 this week and my local range (Sunnyvale Rod and Gun) does silhouette and I would like to try it out. This 10/22 will be used for target shooting exclusively (no hunting unless I was in a situation where I absolutely needed to hunt varmint) and as a new shooter I don't know what I am going to like best...benchrest, silhouette, etc. so I would like to get something that is good for more than one thing. I was thinking of getting the Nikon 3-9x40 (maybe the EFR?) while they have the $50 off promotion but am open to all good advice.

          6-24x42 on my CZ and Weatherby, both are used for sillywet and varmint steel games, and the occasional 100 yd benchrest match, no hunting.

                  Currently my only rimfire (and only rifle, though that will change in the next year or so) has a Hawke 6-24x44 Varmint scope mounted to it. (Savage Mark II BTVS) I haven't even gotten to test out the new scope since mounting it, as I blew out my back big time in November. (had a 4-16x40 mounted previously) For shooting from the bench, the higher magnification is nice. If I were shooting off-hand, I'd probably keep this scope dialed down to 6x, and perhaps still feel like I've got too much magnification. My new rimfire (H&K Umarex MP5 A5) which I will be picking up on 4/5 will be sticking with iron sights. Match the optic to the weapon and intended purpose, and you'll be fine. Putting a 6-24x44 on my MP5 would be silly at best.

                        Overkill? What's that?

                        TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
                        The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
                        Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                        Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                        The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
                        The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                        The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                        Are full of passionate intensity.

                            MORE SCOPE!

                            Gents,
                            In my opinion, I like as much scope as I can get. In fact, I mounted Extra Tall Rings on my Savage .17 with heavy barrel in order to accommodate my Mueller 8.5-25X50.
                            This Savage is great out to 200 meters dead on. Wonderful to look at and comfortable. Just a beautiful gun. Have a look at her. Ain't she pretty?

                                As much scope as you can get, depending on your application.

                                The higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view(generally). But if you're just shooting at paper targets or something, it doesn't matter if your FOV at 100 yards is only 2ft. I've never gone varmint hunting(and have no plans to) but I know I'd never want to use a scope with a magnification so high that the FOV becomes unusable for finding a target. The exit pupil diameter is another problem with really high power scopes, and as a result makes the position of your eye behind the scope so critical that being slightly off can make the thing useless.

                                The last 22 I built has a mueller APV on it, which isn't bad for the price(definitely better than the utg, barska, ncstar, bsa, etc. junk), but doesn't come close in image quality to the leupold vx-3(4.5x14) that resides on my .308 even though they're roughly the same magnification range and same objective lens diameter.

                                That being said, I have a sightron SII 36x showing up eventually for something that will be completed eventually. Why? Curiosity on my part. Even though I don't find the mueller APV to be garbage, I'm just not sure I'd trust their higher magnification scopes to be worth a crap at 100 yards and I wanted a high magnification scope just for the sake of having experience with it(but not wanting to start with something that'll end up being a waste of money).
