Scope over kill for a .22lr!

So after talking to some friends a few think anything above a 3-9 power is over kill. I just happen to think thats a basic starting point. I personally like to hunt squirrels. The highest I go for the tree squirrel is 9. But the ground squirrels ive gone as high as 16 power. 24 on my .22 mag. Only hecause it can reach out to 140+ yards with the right ammo.
What do you all think?

I run a 6x24 on my 10/22 but I don't typically play at less than 50yds

I use a 4x32 plinking scope on my 10/22, but is really only effective up to 100 yards. The highest I would go is 3-9x if you feel you will be taking longer shots..

SFor squirrel, rats, rabbit etc from a fixed position probably no more than 16x due to field of view issues. Moving/shooting I go 4x cause they are typically moving, and snap shots are more the norm. Target work I go 18x at 50 and 100yds. Took many a ground squirrel and rabbit as a kid with a bolt action Remington with a 4x32 scope. Local cattle rancher paid $1 a tail for ground squirrel bounty and the rabbits were unwelcome in my friends dads raspberry fields.

First off quality is far more important than magnification. For my 22 collection I have good scopes ranging from a fixed 4x32 to 3-9x32RF, to 6-24x42 AO, to a fixed 24x40. It just depends on what I use a given 22 for. My next scope purchase will be 4-16x42 for flexibility. I like a 4x32 shotgun or RF scope, 2.5-7x28RF, or a 3-9x32RF/AO for plinking and survival. On the other hand my passion is benchrest and for that I like a good quality 6-24x42 or a 24x40 or even a 36x40.

I do own 2 cheapies but they will eventually be replaced with Weaver Classic scopes.

I put a 3x9 on my 17 hmr when I bought it and then about 8 months later I customized a 10/22 to punch paper and misc shooting 50 yds plus. I put a Mueller 4x14 on the 22. I like the 4x14 so much better I'm going to order another when money allows for my 17. So much better when you get out to 75 or 100 yds.

It really depends on what range you shoot at in my humble opinion. My first 22lr I had a fixed 4X, but I was only shooting out to 50 yards max. I pretty much shoot at 50 yards minimum now and even at as far as 150 yards and I probably wouldn't be able to put the rounds in the outer circle of the target without my 3-9x set to 9 at 150 yards.

My only 10/22 has a Sightron fixed 24X scope and my Remington 40XUS has a Weaver fixed 36X scope. All of my vintage scoped .22s have 4X Weavers except for my Winchester Model 75 with a 24X Unertl.

The high magnification scopes are pretty neat, but only if you are shooting from a rest. Off hand they will make you car sick.

My 10/22 has a 4x (and the farthest I'll shoot it is ~50 yards), the XT-22 has a 3-9x and the 795 has a 3-9x.
