Some sort of trigger work, whether a new hammer and springs, or a full drop in trigger kit, or anything in between, extended mag release, auto bolt release (you can make this your self).

externals are all on you, tons of stocks and barrels and scopes and other stuff to put on them.

im seeing extractors mentioned, mine have been fine, but i will replace them soon just for the hell of it.

6 on 2 trimags would be plenty, i have 1 tri mag and 2 extra mags by themselves

I haven't been yet but I talk to 2 instructors pretty regularly and can say it is well worth it.

I don't think anyone would disagree that it's worth more than any accessory you could buy.

I would definitely suggest an extended magazine release.
I'm not sure which one I have, but it extends the release down just enough so I don't have to fumble to get the magazine out.

I would also highly recommend the volquartsen "exact edge extractor", but it's not necessarily needed unless you're having extraction problems.

Other than those two things, get magazines and ammo! As other suggested, the tech sights are great if you want to shoot iron sights (and like aperture sights).

I spend about 300 tricking out my 10/22. While it is cool and amazingly accurate, I came to the conclusion that what I really want is the standard carbine barrel and tech sights to learn how to shoot better without optics.

Have fun, there's no wrong way to set up a 10/22!

A tac-sol mag release is a must! also either a trigger job or a better trigger. I did the trigger job on mine and got rid of 99% of the slop and its a crisp 3.5# pull.
a new stock is handy depending on how you plan to shoot.
also a whistle pig/kidd/ tac-sol barrel with bump your accuracy and possible lighten your weight.
a good scope will come in handy for shooting the wings off of flies as well!
hope this helps and good luck shooting!

TOTALLY biased opinion: Sliced bread and indoor plumbing ain't got nothing on Appleseed.

I'm not trying to threadjack, I can answer any Appleseed questions you have in PM or on this post.

I've been shooting since I was 4 (51 years) and I found it useful and it's a a lot of fun. I've been twice and will go again.

+1 on Appleseed! One of the best things I've done to improve my shot. Id suggest a scope , sling and a VQ target hammer as well.

-Mags, mags and more mags(and a trimag)
-trigger reworked by Brimstonefor 30 bucks
                          -bolt buffer
                          -sling stud/swivels and sling
                          lastly tech sights

it'll turn your gun into a pretty decent shooter that wont break the bank

                            -Ammo
                            -Mags
-Extended mag release if you have a short one
                            -Tech sights
                            -Synthetic bolt buffer
                            -Sling studs
                            -Auto bolt release
                            -Target hammer

That'd make an awesome 10/22 (like mine!)

It's "cool" out of the box.

Trick it out after you learn to shoot...it needs nothing now but bullets.

I'd thoroughly recommend Appleseed, whether you consider yourself a rank noob or an accomplished shooter you WILL learn to shoot better.

                              Check applseedinfo.org for suggested improvements.

You'll learn VERY quickly that shooting is 95% shooter, 5% gun and ammo.

You'll also learn just as quickly that most shooters with mega-dollar tricked-out .22's have a lot of trouble walking the walk.

What size groups can you shoot with an iron-sighted .22?
