22 vs 17 hmr

Hey guys what are the differences and pros/con of theses?

17hmr is more accurate, goes further, but costs more (than 22lr)

22lr, cheap, plentiful, many varieties. Good for matches to 50 yards, although I take it to 100 on paper, and 400 on steel, on occassion. Good for small varmints, or survivalist hunting. 1200 fps, expands on contact with flesh (deep wounds)

22 WMR, costly, available, good variety, good for matches past 50 yards. Good for Larger Varmints. Expands on contact with flesh (deeper wounds)

17 HMR, costly, less available, less variety. Good for matches to 100 yards. Good for medium varmints, out performs 22 WMR on large varmint at longer ranges. 2500 fps, fragments on contact with flesh (huge diameter, shallow wounds)

Have you considered the 17hm2?? pretty much the same ballistics as 22wmr and 17hmr out to about 100yd mark....not quite as pricey and you can convert a 10/22 with out to much different in price than a .920 barrel convert...you have to add heavier charge handle and spring...may be something to consider...

May I point out that although 17hmr is more expensive, when you buy 22lr with equal accuracy, they are actually close or the same in price.

17hmr is faster then the 22wmr and 22lr.

17hmr uses a smaller round 17, 20 grn and such.
22wmr/22lr uses 30 and 40 and can go smaller I think down to about 28 grn?.

The heavier bullet cause a slower fps and makes it drop faster at distance like 100 to 200 yards.

Accuracy wise, I would say with 100 yards there shouldn't be to much difference, depending on what you are doing, prairie dogs at 100 yards work for all 3 rounds.
SubMOA at 100 yards for competition, 17hmr, Rifleman's MOA (4MOA), all 3 rounds.

One side note, right now you wouldn't have many semi auto 17hmr options; but 22lr is wide open.

22lr hands down. 10/22 has mods for everything times 10!

was planing to just mess around with it
thinking its cheaper to do things to compared to my AR. you know just for fun

I have all 3 and the 17hmr is by far my favorite. Its more accurate and now you can find lots of different types of ammo. I have lead-free, ballistic tip, hollow tip, and fmj. The 17hmr was made for accuracy. 22lr is just for plenking but comes in a wide variety of guns. Remember the 17hmr is a relatively new bullet but was made for accuracy. I like the 17 hmr best out of all 4 of my rimfire rifles

Well if its a fun rifle and you like mods, the 10/22 wins.
If its a fun rifle and mods dont matter, whatever you get will do just fine.
If its fun with a cost measure then 22lr wins.
I have 22lr rifles, want to get a 22wmr and when 17hmr can go lever action or semi without busting the bank then I will get it.

Get the CZ 455 American and have both, or get a 10/22 and have tons of fun

There is some great points here. As always I've found in my choice I went with the .22mag for the following:
1. Heavier bullets are less affected by wind and carry more punch down range.
2. 22mag in most cases is easier to find and there are usually far more choices in stock.
3. For me the "extra" range for the 17hmr isn't a factor for me. I hardly ever take shots beyond 120 yards and at that range its a coyote size animal and I want the most energy on target as possible.

Price is a factor too. I bought by savage 93f when 17hmr was more expensive than the 22mag.

One thing .22LR has that 17HMR doesnt have would be semi-auto. Majority of 17HMR rifles are bolt action. I am very tempted for a 17HMR but I will stay with 22LR and my 22 WMR.

Those 17HMR seem like a rocket. I am just apprehensive because of what happened back when they were made for semi-autos. I would stick with the 22lr and just have fun with 500 rounds for $15
