Marlin 795 is half of the price as Ruger 10/22. Would half of the price is half inferior? How would you guys rate 795 Vs. 10/22 at 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 yards with the same ammo. I have 3 10/22 and 3 Marlins (bolt action) I am seriously thinking about getting 2 795. Any feedback?

The 795 just feels cheesy in all aspects. It's cheap and accurate...that's about all it's got going for it. I bought one for my ex-gf...it served it's purpose, but even being a complete novice, she didn't like how crappy it felt. it IS accurate, but not any more accurate than a factory 10/22
And yes, I would say a 10/22 is worth twice the priceLast edited by trob; 11-18-2011, 8:35 PM. -

Is it cheap? Yes, in price its pretty cheap. However "cheesy", I would disagree.
I would categorize myself as a casual shooter. I do not spend hours on end "modding" my guns or anything like that. I do however like to shoot out the black dot in the center of the target and the 795 is excellent out of the box for exactly that. If you're someone who likes to work on your rifle then I'd say go for the 10/22 as there are far more options. However if you're looking for something solid and accurate out of the box (for a great price), then the 795 is the way to go.
Whats really interesting tho is that you already have 3 10/22's and you're considering 2 795's. I'd really like to know the results of your testing if you get the 795's.Comment

if you already have 10/22s, youd be better served putting the money toward modding one of those rather than buying a 795.

But i agree, OP, if you do get the 795 id like to hear your opinions on the 2.Comment

The Marlin 795 is the magazine fed version of the Marlin 60 which was made 4 years before the 10/22 and has sold over 11 million copies over the Ruger's over 5 million. I can not find the number of Marlin 70 and 795's sold but I'd wager its a couple million as well. And yes these numbers are from wikipedia so take them with a grain of salt
The Marlin 795 may be cheaper then a 10/22 but it's Micro Grooved Barrel is far superior to the Rugers. Another thing that Marlins have stock that Rugers don't is a last shot hold open.
Is the stock amazing? No, its not but its functional. To me a ruger synthetic feels pretty much about the same.
But here's an idea:
With the money you save on the Marlin you can pick up a Boyd's stock for the 795. They have 4 styles and many colors available.
http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Boyds-...rlin-s/158.htm (out of stock for now)
Also DIP makes triggers, guards, charging handles and rails for it before people say there is no after market parts
So lets see better barrel, LSHO, your pick of amazing stock and still cheaper then a Ruger. Hmm that's a hard decision...
Here's what nutnfancy has to say:

I don't like the fact that if you're out of state, or LEO in this state, the 795 can't accept hicap magazines. The 10/22 can. That's a BIG reason why I went with two Rugers. Plus, the 10/22 has far more accessories from various companies out there, wheras the 795 has fewer.
I however think that the Marlin "Micro groove" rifling sucks. That's the reason why Marlin (now Remington) dropped the micro groove garbage out of their 1895 big bore rifles because it could not stabilize the lead bullets.
With standard land & grooves (ballard type rifling), it can shoot lead (unjacketed) bullets all day long. The micro groove type can't.
Some like Ford, Chevy or Dodge.... some like Ruger or Marlin. I figured I could afford the Chevy and the Rugers...sigpic

I shoot mostly targets so my modded Ruger is great. My neighbor is a casual shooter who plinks at cans and left over clay targets the shotgunner left behind. He has just as much fun with his 795 as I have with my 10/22. His 795 is pretty accurate with the iron sights out of the box, and yes it feels a little cheesy. It's just not my type of shooting. We just have different purposes. It's what's gonna work for you.Comment

People shoot lead bullets out of marlins on a regular basis. Sorry, but that copper wash on .22lr is not the same as a jacketed round. Additionally, the marlin CAN accept large capacity mags, the problem is that only one company makes them. There is a huge difference between not being able to accept the magazine, and no one making the mag for it. Hell, Ruger only recently made a 25rd magazine for the 10/22.
More aftermarket accessories =/= better rifle.
People say the same thing about the Tikka centerfire rifles "They're not great because there isn't as much of an aftermarket parts selection as the remington 700" really? Or perhaps the real answer(considering how many more Marlins have been sold than 10/22's) is that there isn't as much of a demand for aftermarket parts, which would seem to imply that people tend to be more satisfied with them straight out of the box.
Having a personal preference is one thing, but don't spout a bunch of nonsense. Does the synthetic Marlin stock feel cheap? Yeap, so does the Ruger synthetic stock. But for the price difference, you can buy the Marlin and replace the stock while having spent around as much as the 10/22 costs. The only really legitimate gripe about the Marlin 60/795 when compared to a Ruger 10/22 is that the Marlins aren't drilled and tapped for a mount making people rely on the crappy dovetail that a lot of mounts have a habit of walking off of.Comment

You can easily fix that with aftermarket dovetail to weaver or picatinney adapters. They work pretty damn well too and install in seconds. Nice and sturdy. Much better than the stock dovetail and relatively cheap ($15 to $35)."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. I own both and they both serve my purpose. I usually don't let newbs handle my 1022 because I put a nice chunk of money on it. I don't worry as much with my 795 because if it gets dropped or scratched, it was still a $130 gun. The 795 is very accurate BTW.Comment
