I picked up the GSG 1911 a few weeks ago and have been lucky to not have problems. I've been reading about the guide rods breaking, so i ordered an aftermarket one from www.cwaccessories.com. Was like $20 shipped. It's well made and worth the peace of mind.
My tax refund came chambered in 9mm...

I got mine almost 2 years ago in Idaho Used it for hand gun training cant tell you how many rounds but 5 or 6 thousand or more when you have 25 kids all shooting you lose count. no at all only use ccc ammo I did change the bushing just because of the material it was made of when I knew I was coming back to cal. they fixed the threaded barrel. The magazine needs to be preban in order to have 11+. Are there mags for a gsg that did not exist in 1990?
Please someone clarify this. In a google search I turn up a 8 page Calguns thread where they call 11 illegal.
          OK, do it now.

            Another update:

I just finally (about an hour ago) received the recoil spring guide. I reassembled the gun. Unloaded function checks seem good.

I can't wait to get this to the range to verify full operation.

Hopefully after two months of waiting for parts I can finally use this gun again.

I will post range report soon (hopefully less then a week).

To those thinking of buying a GSG 1911, think it all the way through. Shop around and find the absolute best price. If something breaks, be prepared to be left in the dark (communications black out) from ATI. And fully expect 2 months of down time.

I would be interested in hearing exactly what parts should be replaced on the GSG, someone should do a write up on the weak links and part numbers for aftermarket parts for guys that want to modify their guns for reliability. My buddy has one and loves it, but I might mention to him to replace the Barrel Bushing, Guide Rod, Recoil Spring? And can these be found on Brownells for this 22lr 1911

My barrel bushing is metal. It seems to be fine. The old recoil spring I had was tapered on one end. The new replacement recoil spring is the same diameter on both ends.

The recoil spring guide is metal. Mine liberated right at the base. I am assuming this is from poor manufacturing. Perhaps in this case, a single piece of extruded plastic could perform better.

The sights are cheap plastic. I already stripped out the front sight. So I will be upgrading those (if I keep the gun).

The trigger feels gritty. I am not one for aftermarket triggers. This gun really is just a toy that is cheap to shoot. So maybe I will break it down and just give it a quick polishing to help it out some.

The gun does NOT like grease on the slide rails. You have to use a light oil.

It appears that it performs better wet (like my SIG).

Stripping is a pain only because there is a screw with an hex-head that has to be removed to strip the gun. Otherwise it is like a regular 1911.

The paint coating comes off pretty easy.

The safety is made from cheap plastic and feel awkward. So that needs to be changed or trimmed as well.

Plus the gun is requires HIGH VILOCITY ammo to cycle properly. I haven't been able to determine the FPS speed cut off. Do not limp wrist it either.

I paid $400 for this gun. I have since seen them much cheaper. So if you really want one. Shop around. Find the lowest price.

                      Glad to hear it Erik.
Over the holiday I was able to replace the broken parts on mine as well, didn’t get to take it out though. Thanks for keeping us updated!

So how does everyone like their GSG? I have read this whole thread. Seems alike the real issues are the guide rod and the ammo. Is this correct? Other than that stuff it is relatively a cheap alternative to a 1911.

hopefully it will be good with the american eagle
