Which one to get?

My SIG 522 is so ugly I bought a 556 so I could have TWIN uglies! I bought
the SIG because at the time it seemed to FUNCTION with any type of ammo
and so far mine has. S&W has had problems right out of the gate with ammo
and "blown" extractors---this to me is unacceptable. A 22LR should
work with any type of 22LR ammo--to have a list of non recommended ammo is
not the answer. My SIG with BUIS is accuracy to the extreme. I can hit the
smallest targets @50 yds at ASR just about 10 for 10 with it(standing offhand). It came out
of the box with a nice trigger,also. Pete

I didnt read this thread, but look at a ruger sr-22. Its not the same bolt or even body, but it feels like an AR in your hands. Mine has never misfired and I couldnt be happier with it. I would either do that or go with a dedicated upper(even though its more expensive). Including the gun, Ive put over $1000 on the SR-22 but LOVE it.

I couldnt buy a S&W .22 just because it felt(and performs) like a toy.... Talk about major problems with nearly 50% of them!

Let me help you, the OP didn't mention a SR-22 among a variety of interests.

And, fwiw, the "toy" you dismiss has worked fine for us and actually has working controls exactly like on our AR. Good for junior when he graduates to 5.56 imho. Same "toy" sends the little tiny .22LR round down the range very accuratly, and despite the bad-mouthing by some in this rimfire section we've found the M&P 15-22 to be really fun and a worthy addition to the safe.

Wondering...where did your 50% figure come from? The majority of people I've talked to (AND read about on the freakin' web) have seemed to enjoy their S&W and have had little to no probs with them. Nice to see the people who have had probs had them takin' care of by S&W and seem to remain happy with their rifles.

Glad you like your SR...we always enjoyed our old 10/22 years ago.

Just my $.02-I love my GSG-5. It shoots everything I've put through it except 29 grain subsonic, which simply didn't cycle. It's accurate too.

I like it because it's a departure from your typical AR platform, and it gets people's attention at the range, too.

I haven't shot the any of the other previously mentioned .22s but I can vouch for the GSG-5.

The 50% figure im sure is off. You shouldnt believe everything you hear on the internet. It needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I just dont buy guns that are currently being sold with malfunction problems. I waited to buy my M&P .40 until they had ALL the bugs worked out, and i have had zero problems with it so far. I just cant see myself buying a gun thats plastic and worry about it kabooming right out of the box...

I just came from Seattle, WA.
I just worked on my brother's 2nd generation GSG5.
I installed the claw HK mount and added the Tasco PDP RED DOT.

I test fired it with all sorts of ammo from lead to CCI Stingers. I was very impressed how accurate the rifle was and was very capable of doing quarter coin size grouping. And no jamming issues.

I will be placing an order for one soon.

Retired, there is now a 2 gun shoot and is for a 22lr pistol and rifle. I will play with the GSG5 for 3 gun 22.

I really like my GSG5 and have not had a problem with it. I'd rather have a real MP5 action and a .22lr conversion for it but, that is cost prohibitive right now. As far as an AR style .22lr goes, it is not that much more to just get a dedicated .22lr upper and either use it on one of your lowers or buy and build a new lower for it. That way, repair parts will be easier to find and you won't have something that sort of looks like something else.

Well, I've decided to buy the S&W 15-22. The $40 mags for the Sig was a big factor besides the looks.

I almost bought it at Raahauge's gun show last Sat. after working the Calguns booth, but I'm glad I didn't. When I returned home, I had a pm from a leo buddy advising me of a much better price at a place that sells to active/retired leos.

I'm going down tomorrow to start the jail paperwork. Thanks for all of the comments, I appreciate the help.

Well it looks like it is to late, but I agree with CSACANNONEER. Dedicated .22 upper from TacSol is the way to go. I have had the S&W, and the Colt. I have never owned the Sig, but have shot it a couple of time. It is my opinion that the Tac Sol uppers are the best by far.

You should be buying Black Dog mags for the SIG---they are about HALF

I just checked their site and they are $25. I appreciate the info, but the cheapest I've been able to find the Sig was $440 (just for the rifle) and that was from a le only place.

I can get the S&W for $389 and the mags are $15 at another le only place. If the Sig was closer in price, I'd probably do it even tho I said it was ugly since it seems to have had less problems, if any.

I didn't go to the store today anyhow as some stuff came up.

Nah, I bought a Marlin 795 at Turners a couple of months ago for $109, primarily to teach my grandkids. I really bought it for my 10yr. old grandson, but it will stay in my safe.

At one point I was looking for an older 10/22, but couldn't find any. I don't care for the newer ones and even if I found an older one, I had no intention of modifying like a lot of guys do.

I was interested in the tactical looking .22 for myself, just because of what they look like.
