Will the 22 tacticool trend be short lived?

What do you guys think about the current trend of high priced replica 22 rimfire rifles and how long do you think this trend will last?

I bought a GSG-5 and now I'm happy that I sold it. It was very accurate and very reliable, even with the cheapest ammo, but I just couldn't get over how heavy it was. But at least the GSG is reliable, the Colt AR 22 that my friend got is a jam-o-matic with anything but expensive CCI Minimags. I hope the S&W is better but even if it is I won't be getting one. I'm over my need to have an overpriced heavy tactical replica gun.

    What do you guys think?

.22LR is cheaper than the alternatives, so I will be shooting it forever.

I'm will too! I'm asking if your interest in the current 22 cal replical rifles will last vs other 22 cal rifles such as good quality lever actions, pumps, semi's, etc.?

I know my interest in these rifles was short lived and I'm back to appreciating well designed accuate, light weight rifles such as the Marlin 39A, Winchester 63, etc.

They aren't that bad. CCI mini-mags are not expensive when shooting all day vs any other higher caliber firearm.

uhhh, why would you care if the S&W is better if you wont be getting one?

well, whether it dies off or not, doesnt really matter to me. my 10/22 has a butler creek folding stock, thats as tacticool as i get. the stock was only $70, and coupled with a $180 10/22, i think i win. i never understood the mp5/ak/ar 22s. the ar .22 bcg solution is pretty awesome, but i dont think that falls into the same category..

I cannot see myself buying a fancy tacticool 22 for the money they want.

5000 rounds of 22lr for $260 vs 1000 rounds of 223 for $350? I think 22LR tacticool will be around for a long time.

It's like asking if the tacticool range warrior trend itself will ever die down.

Let's see. $35 for 500+ rounds of .22lr or $150-180 for 500 .223 rounds. The cost of shooting just to shoot will always be advantage 22lr. As far as how tacticool you look and feel doing it, well, that's a judgement call. I just don't understand how these rifles are considered overpriced. Just shoot 3000 rounds of each caliber through it's corresponding platform then consider how expensive each one really is to own.

I have a replica winchester 1890 pump .22 rifle and my Grandfathers Browning semi-auto. They are great rifles and I wouldn't give em up for anything. I bought my GSG-5 because I wanted a magazine fed "modern" .22. I know that there were many other (cheaper) choices I could have gone with but the MP clone was just too cool to pass up. If that lessens any of my "street cred" then so what, I like it. This fad may run its course but I suppose it depends on the quality of the rifles themselves. Plenty of people poo-pooed the M-16 and it's still around. I don't see the AR style clones lasting too long if the price doesn't come down though but what do I know, I bought a house in 2005.

I think they will be huge in CA until the AWB is removed, if ever.

The ability to have a pistol grip and whatnot without using a BB is a large appeal, at least to me.

I also think the "tactical" look is what is popular nation wide these days.

I agree though, they are pretty expensive. I would not pay more than $500 for a .22 rifle.

Hopefully the SiG-522 is good and stays around $400 with mags that cost $20 or so.

They are crowd pleasers when you take new people shooting, especially with the ladies. That alone makes them worth the weight and money.

For yours, my friends and other peoples sake, I do care.

Until recently there was only two choices, the GSG and the Colt AR. Knowing what I know now the GSG was the only good choice. If the S&W proves reliable that gives you and my friends another option and hopefully it's priced a lot less than the GSG. I paid $650 for mine and was lucky to sell it for close to that. I think when you accept the high price because it's still cheaper than a real AR and because Mini-mags are still a lot cheaper than 223, then you're really lost because it's still, just a 22!

I am into any realiable fun semi-auto 22's. I would rather have a GSG-5 than a 10/22. So the answer is yes.

Well when i bought the .22 i wasn't planning on doing anything but murder paper, and maybe a few cans outside of the range.

So in terms of just plinking i personally don't mind and have accepted paying $6.00 to pull the trigger 100 times.

good looking out though for the rest of us. And to answer your original question, yeah the trend will probably stick since most of the newer models are sub $500 even sub $400 so far outside of Cali.

i don't think it will die down so much as it will become the norm. the hype i feel is dying down, but not the interest/demand.

and depending on the reliability of the S&W (current FTE issue) i can wait for them to put out Gen2 of these guns that improve on reliability. .22lr guns won't ever be beat IMO for a cheap fun day at the range. and it also allows me more choices in where i can shoot (closer ranges) so i can get more trigger time with .22lr guns than my centerfire rifles.
