I have one of those gallery pump .22s like the winchester but mine is a remington and has an internal hammer. It was my Grandfathers. The date stamp on it is 1909. My Grandfather used it to feed the family during the depression. It too breaks down with the one thumb screw. It drives tacks and other than having a less than NRA finish is still in perfect shape.Comment

That concept is my ideal rifle for this purpose. I owned one about 20 years ago for about a day and returned it. Had it worked I'd have kept it. I've been looking for something similar ever since.I love my Feather AT-22 w/ pre-ban 20 rounders. Only 3 lbs. and breaks down into a very hand carrying case. Also seems to eat anything I feed it...
(stock photo)

I still waiting (dreaming) for Ruger to modify their awsome MKII/MKIII pistol design and turn it into a carbine with a sliding stock and a 16" barrel...that would be perfect!
Without question in my mind the 22 lr carbine is the best choice.
The slide action Taurus/Rossi looks good. I also like the Marlin 39A but it's bloody expensive. And I know the Papoose is good. I have a CZ 452 with 16" barrel that is very nice but it doesn't take-down into a smaller package.
The GSG-5 is too heavy to carry, but it would be a good bug-in rifle.
Until I find something that takes-down and shoots well, I'm going to choose my little CZ 452 rifle. I'd back this up with a G19 for if I ever get into a knife fight.Last edited by smittty; 09-12-2009, 12:16 AM.Comment

+1, thinking the same here, but with the original stock. I can see why you went with the ATI, I'm just not sure if I like the cheekweld area, but the weight tradeoff could be worth it. The 795 with Tech sights on it is super accurate, and the 795 itself seems very robust and easy to clean.
I would find a 10/22 to be too fragile -- mine has broken already after 7k rounds or so, and is a mfer to totally break down and clean compared to other guns. If I need the "Toyota pickup" of .22's, I'm picking the Marlin, with a GI sling, and tech sights. So you have an easy way to carry it, and a sighting system that gets you extremely accurate, especially in a standing position with a hasty sling.Comment

for survival on small game / hunting for food. A TC Contender is hard to beat with a .22 lr / .308 / 12 gauge barrels.
Single shot break action, but you have versatility.
For SHTF, i would grab my AR and 9mm, and stick with military calibers since you can easily scrounge for those.Comment
