.22lr issues

I made my way over to Angeles range today. I had a good time shooting the 9 and .308. I also brought my .22 but had no fun with that. I have a marlin 795 and for some reason it has been malfunctioning the last few times at the range.
I would load a magazine, with the bolt open, slam the bolt shut and the first round would fire fine. I go to pull the trigger, and..... nothing. I keep pulling...and still nothing. I pull the mag and clear the chamber, and a live round pops out. So the rifle is feeding, but for some reason not firing.
I borrowed another persons magazine to make sure it wasnt the mag, and it wasnt. I use fmj rounds since I know the rifle is picky about that. I cleaned it up real good the last time I was done with the range, since it was misbehaving at that time too.
I completely took it apart today to clean it, and I still havent put it back together since I had one too many beers to see straight in the process(plus, im having a hard time to put it back together with all the small parts, the manual doesnt help).
Can anyone come up with an idea of why my "ol reliable" isnt being reliable? Ive only had it for 6 years and never abused it. I clean it after every trip to the range and pretty much baby it.
I know this isnt a centerfire, but there isnt a rimfire section to post.

I'm assuming you know what ammo it likes. When that happens I would check the round to see if there is an indentation to see if the round was struck by the firing pin. My guess would be it is not and that your problem might be a broken firing pin or the spring for the firing pin. Let us know what you find out. I am sure you will be up and running in no time.

duh, of course theres a rimfire section!!! There is no indentation on the round so maybe the spring is out. I need to look for parts online. Is there a comprehensive layout of how to put everthing back piece by piece by any chance

I had a similar issue with an old 10/22. I replaced the guide rod spring and the issue went away. I'm not familiar with the Marlin 795 but maybe its having the same issue.

Another problem common with rimfire is dryfiring. Not a problem with 10/22's but with other rifires, not so good. Not saying you're doing this, just mentioning the possibility for others reading here. The owner's manual should state if the gun can be dryfired without damage. If it does not say, assume no.

"The rare occasional dry fire in a modern rimfire isn't likely to hurt anything but repeated dry fire can have a few side effects. The most likely is a dinged breech face and/or the pin moving and distorting it just enough that a burr pushes into the chamber. This obviously can cause feeding and extraction issues. The second likely result can be a broken firing pin which is obviously bad juju, no firing pin means no boom from your boomstick. Also the pin on a rimfire is generally more brittle then those of a centerfire."

so i think i figured it out. I think the sear spring fell off the magazine lever assembly. It might be a while till i can make it to the range but i hope this is it

get some CCI CB shorts and test fire it in your house!
(with a proper back stop of course. Actually Aguila Colibris would be even better but too bad walmart doesnt carry them.)
