That looks like a fun setup shark..Nice

That is the great thing about assembling your own dedicated upper..Make it how you like it..

Hello OP and fellow Calgunners. It's been a while. I'm guessing a couple of years since I logged in. I put a freeze on collecting, but mostly because my gun safe is full. Ok, back to the subject. So with the current high prices of 223/556 ammo, I starting looking into getting a dedicated AR for 22lr also. But since I have several AR's, I decided to switch one of them with the CMMG 22lr conversion kit. Read many reviews and most are positive. Just ordered so it should arrive by next week. Good luck

My very first foray into the .22 Long Rifle in an AR was a dropin conversion..My 5.56 barrel was a 1/9 twist..It shot fairly well..But it did not take me long to build a dedicated upper and swap out the chamber adapter for a dedicated collar, and buy a dedicated barrel...There are some out there that are plenty happy with a dropin in a 5.56 barrel..But most morph into a dedicated setup..But it is a good starting point to get going cheap if you already have a 5.56 upper..

Early on I had a USGI Air Force conversion for the M16..It was much better than the Army version..If I remember right also..The AF version atleast held the bolt back on the last round with the magazine follower..And the AF version would operate with a full auto M16..The Army version did neither..I should have kept that 90.00 AF conversion around, but was dumb and sold it..

        Welcome back.

I love the M&P 15-22. The kids love it also because it's light and easy to maneuver. They will run mag after mag through it without any problems on range trips. I have had people come up to me and comment about how reliable it runs. You can't beat it out of the box. It just works well.

All my assembled ARs in 22 also run 100% reliable..Reliability is not the issue I have with the SW..Problem with me is the part you mentioned..Light is just another code word for cheap plastic "light" construction...,LOL Good for the maker as they just have to injection mold a piece of plastic and maybe drill a few holes....And be done..Not so good for the end user..But a cheap process for the maker...Maybe the US Government should have SW start making the M16 in plastic,LOL Just think how the troops would appreciate the lightness of that plastic..

More power to those who love the SW. They are fun little toy, especially for the kids...I just like my AR22s to be more less Mil Spec, not a copy of a AR..I know my Aluminum lowers will last many lifetimes and the rest of the parts likely also....I highly doubt the plastic SW ones will make it 50 years with heavy use..As good as they say the new plastics are..They will never keep up with real metals..Just imagine if 1873 Colts and 1873 Winchesters would have used plastic parts..Think there would be many around today..Not likely..

Sorry if you want a real quality AR 22..You have to pony up the bucks and buy from a reputable maker..Or build it yourself..

Swapped the handguard and flash hider on a CMMG 22LR upper. Lower is a Anderson multi cal stamped with nice 2 stage trigger and A1 grip. As close to an A1 retro as I wanted to put effort into making it. Blackdog mags and runs just fine with several hi-vel ammo brands.

They have a deal right now.

                    M&P 15-22 with included red/green dot non-magnifying sight.
$500 most places if not less by around $30-40.

Amazing rifle. Super easy to use. Quiet. Really easy to learn and service regularly.

If you do decide to get one. First things first.

Load it up. ADJUST THE OPTICS!
Look through the dot. Line it up left and right, as out of box they are not aligned.

If you are going to the range, there are 4 different distance adjustments. 25 meters apart.

Keep it set to 25meters, farthest click back.
Test 1-5 shots. Make sure it hits in line.

                    Enjoy!

Started out with the Air Force M261 conversion and mag inserts with an Olympic Arms Stainless Ultra Match (SUM) upper, 1:10 twist and Stagg lower. Worked very well with heavy subsonic bullets from PMC (no longer available.) Lighter bullets were not as accurate.

Picked up a CZ V22 dedicated upper. Side charger, no place to mount a front sight. Proprietary mags. No place to mount a front sight, but functioned well and fairly accurate with the right ammo. I forgot what it liked to shoot.

My last build was a CMMG dedicated upper. I like this build the best. Tried a variety of magazines until I settled on the S&W 15-22 mags. LRBHO feature works with these mags. I don't remember which ammo it liked.

In between the builds I picked up the Umarex Colt M4 .22 rimfire carbine. Looks like a real Colt, especially with the rollmarks, but it is not an AR. Fun plinker. Kids like it. Don't really care for it.

I still have everything. Probably time to get rid of everything except the CMMG. That's the only one I would keep.

I decided to roll my own. The lower is done and has a binary trigger. Bought most of the parts from right to bear arms. 16 barrel with triangle hand gaurds. I found an A1 upper just ordered. Now waiting for my parts and time to assemble. Man the parts add up quickly but I will have what I want.

I bought a complete M&P15-22 for less than I could build an upper and a lower for with 22 conversion parts.
M&P mags are better than any of the various AR-15 22 caliber conversion mags.

I have a 22LR built on a regular AR receiver set too, but when I go to the range, the M&P is the one that always goes with me.

I'm of the same mind. M&P 15-22s work great, their mags are the best they're relatively inexpensive and my grandkid's love them for the weight. I do have an AR22 also I'm working on just for a retro style .22lr. Like many I started with an Atchison military .22 conversion back in the late 70's and still have it.
