If you can find a Rock Island bolt action I think they are a little cheaper, but not a single shot.

So there are tons of classic 22 bolt actions out there, something like a Remington 510 for instance, that maybe aren't great cosmetically. These end up, usually as part of an estate, sitting in certain types of gun stores being skipped over by most customers because a 10/22 is only a couple hundred bucks.

On the peninsula in the SF bay area my go to spots were Krausewerks collectibles (closed since pandemic) and imbert and smothers. Basically you want to look for gun stores that look they are run by antique gun hoarders. Prices will be up and down, but there always good deals if you keep looking long enough. The rush in the early pandemic cleaned out a lot of stuff but there is always more old guns that sadly someone's kid doesn't want.

In such stores, you will find cheap old 22 rifles.

Yes buy a good old wood and steel vintage USA one..The single shot .22s can be found at just about every Gun Show or Shop.Around these parts anyway.

They are not rare by any means..And are actually very slow movers at aforementioned places..I am going to a local show this weekend and will probably see atleast ten, but it is a smaller show..Hardly ever see one you cannot get for well under 200.00 in nice shape..Much lower priced if a lower condition one with say cosmetic issues..
