Rimfire only fans

I know there must be a few of you out there.

Had a friend who was perfectly content having firearms in .22 rimfire only. Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60, Remington 552, Ruger Mark I, Ruger Single Six, etc.

His reasoning? Cheaper ammo, you can defend yourself with a rimfire, low recoil, less noise, etc.

I used to think that he was mostly just cheap. I mean you can save some money by buying .22 rifles and pistols and ammo is considerably cheaper than centerfire. I bought a brand-new Marlin Model 60 years ago for about $150 on sale.

Maybe it's because they're just fun to shoot.

Any other believers?

In my 64 years, I’ve never met anyone that had more than a couple firearms own nothing but 22’s. I’ve met a couple that just have a single firearm and it’s a 22.
Ya, I’d say anybody on a tight budget and getting into guns the last 10 years or so, I can see that.

I own other Calibers..But I like Rimfires the best...22 and 17HM2.

Got two Buckmarks, Dan Wesson 22, 10-22, Marlin Papoose, Remington 521 JS, and my new unfired Savage MkII FV SR. Do I qualify as a rimfire fan even though I have centerfires also?

Owning vs using (shooting).

Nothing quite like rimfire for pure enjoyment. Grab a rife or handgun, a bucket of ammo and you can spend all day shooting and not even think about anything but having fun.

The only thing close and maybe even equal is airgun. That stuff is becoming an art.

I have about 35 handguns and without counting I'd say at least half are .22's. I generally go to the range once a week and generally alternate between rimfire and centerfire. With the centerfires, it's generally self-defense practice with outline targets and hitting center mass. With rimfire, I use bullseye targets and concentrate on finer accuracy. All good - and that includes eight .22 rifles as well.

I love rimfire but I'm not married to it. Lots of fun centerfire cartridges out there to enjoy. But I always have a couple of rimfires with me on every range trip.

For an older person with arthritis- a 10/22 might be a good choice for protection


But rimfire is not as reliable as center fire from an ignition standpoint.

If "major" power factor sucks at stopping a person -9mm, 40,45- if those are bad with 1-2 rounds for stopping an attack, I'm not sure the data of 22 LR is on your side.


Sure - a poacher with a spotlight can shoot a frozen deer in the brain with a 22 and take it down.


In general, I'm not sure people hunt critters much bigger than fluffy bunnies with a 22 lr


And yes- I probably shoot more 22 than other rounds each year.

The older I get the more I enjoy rimfire. I’ll never have it as my only caliber, but it’s practical. My Brownells/Kidd 10/22 that I built is a hoot. Way more accurate of a gun than the shooter behind it. I’ll normally sharpen my skills with my 10/22 before I put my 308 on the bench as a warm up.

I like .22lr a lot. Have a couple 10/22s upgraded with Volquartsen parts, Ruger MKII Target, and an Advantage Arms .22 conversion for my Glock 26. Jonesing for a Ruger LCRx 8shot revolver, but none seem to be available anywhere right now.

I have a friend who has only one rimfire pistol and one rimfire rifle. He believes that his rimfire pistol is sufficient for home defense .

As mentioned above old age or of course any type of injury might make the 22 a better choice for some people. I have a feeling it brings back, at least for me, those younger years when you and your friends used to go out with your 22s and just do some friendly plinking for the sheer enjoyment of it, without any self-defense or serious competitions.

And your friend isn't alone in his thinking. The 22 caliber Firearms are the most popular in the world even in countries that don't restrict people to that caliber only.
