    Dedicated .22 upper Vs. 10/22

How accurate are dedicated .22lr uppers? I am thinking about a spikes tactical or a Model 1 Sales. I have a 10/22 but want to ditch it for a dedicated upper, just so I can have my cheap practice with an ar too.

If its a barrel designed for 22lr than it should be pretty accurate. I think as always, it depends what you are looking to get. For the price of an upper, you will be able to upgrade the 10/22 into a tack driver that a standard ar will not be able to touch. If you are more concerned with getting trigger time on an AR, than the answer is clear.

I've been looking at this really hard - dedicated upper, 10/22, SU-22 (Kel-Tec) or one of the new breed of AR-like .22 only rifles.

So far, one of the best options I've found is the new S&W M&P15-22 which is VERY AR-15 like (controls function like the AR) and less costly than the dedicated uppers that are of any decent quality/reliability.

Engineered on a high strength polymer upper and lower receiver, the M&P15-22 benefits from reduced weight while retaining the looks and operating features of the standard M&P15 rifle. The new semi-automatic rifle features a 16-inch barrel with a twist of 1 in 15 inches. The M&P15-22 is standard with a six-position collapsible stock to accommodate a variety of shooters and shooting positions, an A3 style flat top upper receiver with a quad-rail handguard for easily mounting optional accessories and an A2 pistol grip for improved firearm control.

The new tactical rifle also features a fully functional charging handle, an AR-15 style magazine release, bolt catch and a two-position receiver mounted safety. The M&P15-22 is complete with a removable 25 round magazine along with a removable A2-style front post sight, an adjustable A2-style rear sight and a single stage trigger. An optional barrel shroud is also available.

        SKU: 811030
        Model: M&P15
        Caliber: .22LR
        Capacity: 25 Rounds
        Action: Blow Back Semi-Auto
Overall Length: 33.75" Extended, 30.5" Collapsed
        Stock: 6 Position CAR Stock
        Sight Radius: 15.5"
        Barrel Length: 16"
        Barrel Twist: 1 in 16"
        Weight (No Mag.): 5.5 lbs.
        Trigger Pull: 7 lbs. (approx.)
        Upper and Lower Material: Polymer
        Barrel Material: 4140 Steel
        Finish: Matte Black
        Front Sight: Adj. A2 Post
        Rear Sight: Adj. Dual Aperture

Just based on specs and design I would take the S&W over that Colt any day.

I have a dedicated Spikes ST-22 SD upper and I am very pleased with it. It is accurate and a great shooter with great looks!

              OK i had both;

A 10/22 w/ green mt barrel, kid trigger, hogue stock, super sniper scope, larue scope mount, bipod

and a Spikes tactical dedicated 22lr upper basic m4 with carry handle iron sights, rra 2 stage trigger, magpul crt stock.

The 10/22 was more accurate, but it just sat in the safe
The spikes came to the range every trip, did an appleseed event to save on 223, and is handed to every new shooter i take out as the gun to start on. At the appleseed event, the Spikes would do all shots on a 1 inch square at 25 yards/4moa just fine (when i concentrated) with just iron sights.

I sold the 10/22 and haven't missed it one bit. The spikes is worth it's weight in gold, I'm actually thinking about a 22lr 20" model1 with mational match sights to go along with the spikes m4

This post got me thinking... if they put a ban on AR-15's, would it be legal to keep an AR-22?

I love my ARs and I love my 10/22s. I'd keep and customize the Ruger.

                      +1

You can make good use of a .22 AR and a 10/22 Ruger. After many years of shooting I am of the mind that everyone should have at least one 10/22. Cheap to upgrade if you are sensible. I have a superbly accurate 10/22 that I put together for a few hundred bucks. You don't have to go overboard if you use your head.

That being said, I have a .22 conversion for my AR and it gets shot more than anything else I own. I am currently putting together a dedicate .22 upper that will be more accurate than the conversion.

I will NOT sell any of my three Rugers. Each has a purpose. Neither am I interested in selling any of my AR's, well maybe one of them, maybe. I like them all for what they are. Each has its place.

If I could only have ONE gun............I would be feeling sorry for myself. Don't ask me or any law abiding free man, to give up any of their guns.

So I decided to keep my 10/22. I got the tech-sights for it, and am getting a rail custom fit in front of the rear sight, the sight picture will be the same as my ar, even with the red dot in place. The accuracy is what got me, not worth it to pay more for an ar type, when it shoots worse. It is the hits that count, not how cool your gun looks.

I wish I knew how to make my 10/22 accurate without spending an arm and a leg on it. That old battle axe cant hit a milk jug at 100yds.
