How about Lapua X-act or Eley Tennex??? Some of them are over $25.00 per box of 50.

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of this stuff, a couple of 500 rd boxes and a handful of 50 rd boxes. This afternoon we went shooting and I took my 10/22 to try out the new extractor, so I grabbed what I had of the 50 rd boxes of Aguila. Well, the extractor worked fantastic, but that Mexican ammo didn't even have enough ooomph to cycle the bolt on my Ruger. Sounded like a spring-loaded pellet gun. I don't know how old this ammo is, or how it was stored, but its only good for a bolt-action. Rem Goldens and Wildcats shot excellent.

Check to make sure you don't have the Aguila "Sub Sonic" or "Super Colibri" ammo. The Sub Sonic is a 60gr. bullet at low speed to operate quiet, and the Super Colibri has no powder, it depends on primer only to push a very light 20gr. bullet at 500 fps with no noise. The sub sonic will often not cycle a semi-auto rifle, and the super colibri is for use in handguns only, and will definitely not cycle anything.

The one's I like are the Super Maximum, 30gr. bullet, avail. in either solid or HP, and have a rated muzzle velocity of 1750 fps. I have never had a problem with them cycling anything. In fact they do about the best in running my Mini-14 .22lr conversion. Most .22lr does not have the power to cock the Mini's hammer with the light .22lr bolt, resulting in an intersting full auto until the thing jams situation.

The Aguila .22 I used yesterday is "Super Extra" subsonic, or as it says on the box, "22 largo rifle subsonico". It fires a 38 gr bullet and the box markings are purple-ish pink.

The stuff I have in the 500 rd boxes is also "Super Extra" but is standard velocity, fires a 40 gr bullet, and the box markings are blue. I haven't shot this stuff yet.

Neither box gives any FPS ratings.

Aguila has all sorts of stuff out there, I think some is still available some places, but no longer produced. The Super Extra subsonic is 1025 fps, and won't reliably cycle a semi-auto. The Colibri and Super Colibri have no powder, use primer only with 20 gr. bullets at 375 fps and 500 fps respectively. They are to be used in handguns only - they may not clear a rifle barrel, and will not cycle a semi-auto. I believe the Super Extra Standard Velocity is either 1135 fps or 1250 fps, and will behave pretty much the same as most standard .22lr.

I buy a few bricks or more of whatever .22 shows up at good prices. With an assortment of .22s, one of them's bound to like it pretty well, and with a .22 revolver, you know you'll be able to shoot it up.

For guaranteeing quality, reliability and testing for the best groups, I buy MiniMags and SK Standard Plus now and again, but most of my ammo is whatever's inexpensive.

I've never had any go to waste yet.

Try some Ely Match Extra, Ely Silhouette, Federal Gold Match, Ely Club.

and RWS R-50. That stuff can SHOOT! (believe me, you shoot better when you know what the ammo costs -- no praying and spraying! )

What about Wolf Match .22LR? I thought it was Eley primed?

Yeah, SK Standard Plus is the best value I've found in precision ammo, especially for those of us who don't compete in matches. I use it as my accuracy testing ammo. Once I get a rifle or pistol dialed in with other ammo, I benchrest some groups with the SK to see what the gun's capable of.

It won't always cycle reliably in every gun, but it'll still show good groups. Guns like the Mosquito or P22 don't show any difference between SK or Remington Golden, so that tells me I can shoot the cheap stuff and not worry about whether it's me or the gun. More accurate guns will tighten up the groups nicely with the SK.
