Best .22lr Ammunition?

So, I have a few .22lr guns that I like to shoot, and since the ammo is incredibly cheap either way, I choose to run only the best ammo through them. I have always just bought CCI Mini-Mags for them and never had a problem, but I was wondering if there is any better ammo out there (I'm pretty clueless about it).

Anyways, if it helps, there is a GSG-5, AR-22, Kimber Target (1911), Mosquito, 597TVP, S&W617.

Lapua and Eley make very accurate (and pricey) .22lr ammo.

I'd stick w/ the more moderately priced Wolf and CCI ammo, however, unless you're shooting some Italian-made Olympic bullseye gun.

The most expensive .22 I've ever bought is CCI. For me, the "best" .22 ammo is the one that my 10/22 will feed reliably and that can hit a tin can at 50 yards. Can't beat winchester white box in that regard.

Try some Ely Match Extra, Ely Silhouette, Federal Gold Match, Ely Club.

Each firearm will have its own particular taste in which ammo it likes. You might want to buy multi brand, and different price point within each brand, to try out. Start with the lower priced, and work your way up to the expensive match grade ammo. You will start to see when each firearm, will come to a point where it will not shoot the top grade ammo any better, then its lower priced stuff.

Eley: Standard, Target, Club Xtra, Match, Ten X.
Lapua: SK Standard Plus, Rifle Match, Match, Center X, Midas, X act. etc.
RWS: Target Rifle, Match, R-50.

What about Wolf Match .22LR? I thought it was Eley primed?

I shot SK Standard Plus yesterday through my Anschutz 1907 rifle. I shot 5 shots into one hole at 50 yards. It is a good ammo at a reasonabla price.

Eley makes the best .22 ammo with respect to consistency and quality control, but your guns probably aren't capable of shooting better than the ammo.

Every .22 is different and since you can't handload a .22 rimfire, you've got to try different loads. International and Olympic level shooters even want to test different lots of the same ammo because some runs are better than others for their guns.

Wolf Match Target is made in Germany using Eley priming compound. It has a unique smell. When I shoot it, people think I'm shooting the high end Eley stuff. It's great ammo when you can find it. It's the same stuff as SK but in a different package.

For the 22, I generally use ammo that's accurate enough for the job to save money so I've not tested many of the very expensive ones. But here's what I've found using after some testing (pretty much tested all the mid-priced ones).

So far, Eley Tenex works the best in my 22 pistols, better than the CCI Pistol Matc that I normally use. However, it is about 2x more expensive, so I only use it at larger matches when shooting bullseye.

RWS R-50 works the best in my rifles, but again, I normally use RWS Target Rifle due to cost. Since I only shoot smallbore silhouette fortunately, the Target Rifle is good enough here. (Interestingly, Target Rifle works well in my pistols too, but not as accurate as CCI Pistol Match).

BTW, if you like CCI mini-mags (which I don't consider accurate), you'll probably love theabove.

I really like the Aguila Super Maximum .22lr ammo. The problem is the price has pretty much doubled, and it is hard to justify the cost.

I really like the Aguila Super Maximum .22lr ammo.

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of this stuff, a couple of 500 rd boxes and a handful of 50 rd boxes. This afternoon we went shooting and I took my 10/22 to try out the new extractor, so I grabbed what I had of the 50 rd boxes of Aguila. Well, the extractor worked fantastic, but that Mexican ammo didn't even have enough ooomph to cycle the bolt on my Ruger. Sounded like a spring-loaded pellet gun. I don't know how old this ammo is, or how it was stored, but its only good for a bolt-action. Rem Goldens and Wildcats shot excellent.

Hit that one square center . . . 22 rifles are a breed unto there own and are quirky compared to their big brothers. The simpliest answer is which ever bullet and brand your rifle likes. Get a box of several and shoot away. I blew through many 50 rd boxes of many different brands and flavours etc before I settled on what my rifle liked the best at all ranges.
