I need advice on a good bolt action .22. I'm quite loyal to Remingtons and have been looking at the Remington Model Five, however, none of the gun stores I went to had one. My budget is roughly $200-$300. I've read good things about CZ and Savage rifles. Thanks Calgunners.

Bolt action .22 help please

You trying to conserve ammo? Thats about the only advantage to a bolt .22!
I have to ask, why so set on a bolt-action? I can understand brand-loyalty, so hows-a-bout the Rem 597? Magazine-fed semi-auto and the price competes with the 10/22. A .22 is so much more fun in a semi-auto (IMO). Besides, if you buy the Remington 597, then you get to tell people you just bought a "semi Remy"-- which is just plain good fun all in itself.

i shot a ruger 10/22 that jammed a lot, the rifle is being used mainly to teach my friends how to shoot, and i'm not about to let them shoot my Remington 700 .270 their first time. Also, I can't shoot my .270 as liberally because prices went up. I'm more comfortable with a bolt action, its safer for a beginner to shoot it because theres less chance for a negligent discharge. Although, you do make a good point my friend, a semi would be more fun. I'm loyal to Remington because all of my long guns so far are Remingtons, and they've never failed me.If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Love my Marlin 925R. Very accurate rifle. Replaced return spring with spring from the ball pen. Triger is sweet.

Get the Savage MkII and don't look back - its the best bang for you buck out there.I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.
As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.Comment

Thanks everybody, I am now looking highly considering the Savage mark II and will be calling different gunshops to see if they have it in stock so that I could see it for myself. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Both the Savage MKII and CZ452 are excellent rimfires.
OP stated you wanted a rimfire to practice with and you currently have a Remington bolt action in .270Win.
My only cavet with the CZ452 is the safety works backwards to what you're used to/what is on your CF rifle. On the CZ452, the safety is FORWARD for SAFE, BACK for FIRE.
I realize there will be many posters that say that is not a big deal, but just so you are aware of it.
For ME, it was a deal breaker and I ended up with a Savage MKII.Luck favors the prepared.

I have the CZ 452 varmint model, the CZ FS and a Savage Mk II Classic. They're all accurate, the CZ varmint was a touch on the small side so I added an adjustable "recoil" pad. The Savage is full sized, nice walnut scheckered stock. Either one will shoot one hole groups at 50 yds with whatever ammo it likes. I'd say a 22 bolt still has an accuracy advantage over the semi autos in general, the tricked out 10/22s may be an exception. My 10/22 Ruger Target does very well, the CZ & Savage still beat it. But the 10/22 is more fun, especially with the hi caps.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment
