I just found out that the Marlin 795, is a preferred gun by some Appleseed instructors over the Ruger 10-22. Either gun is great, lots more options and accessories for the Ruger. http://appleseedinfo.org/
My son, Isaac, said that the Ruger is the "AR" of 22s -lots of options, more expensive, and the Marlin is the "SKS", cheaper with maybe, fewer options.
The difference? Ruger is 220 to 250, and it needs some work to make it really usable for Appleseed. The Marlin is 149 bucks at Bass Pro, we hear, sometimes on sale for $99.
I do not know yet about modifications, needed.
My oldest son custom designed a Sling which works both ways; hasty or loop with a buckle QD to take the loop sling off the arm quickly between shooting times.
Ian qualified twice Saturday, shooting a 225, and a 221, out of 250 possible, and so began as an instructor on Sunday; very cool.

For BOTH guns you can get military style peep sights for front and back, with adjustable windage and elevation. These increase accuracy immensely, giving almost 30 to 40% longer sight radius, and improving the target sight picture as well. Tech Sights

I was thinking of buying a Marlin 795... they are available at the local Sports Authority for $ 99.... almost seems worth the expense and hassle of doing the bureaucratic paperwork necessary to buy a gun in Hawaii... The stock seems far too short for me.... a youth-sized rifle... I have been thinking of a replacement stock, with a longer distance from trigger to butt-plate...I like synthetic stocks, such as what comes with the rifle, but a wood stock, such as from E-Bay, could also serve....

my 795 had a similar problem

the front tech sight when mounted was skewed to the right. Turns out the screw hole was off centered. I had to send it back to marlin for a fix which took around 4 months I think. They gave me a free mag for my troubles

For elevation adjustment I use a wooden disposable chop stick and for windage I use a coin

I think that is probably the same problem I have because like I stated before, the rear factory sight is mounted crooked too. Thanks, I'll give marlin a call and hope for the best.

So, I went to the range and I must say that I've never been so frustrated with a new gun before. Tech sights adjustment knobs are a PITA. After several painful attempts to adjust the sights, I couldn't get it zeroed. I was so frustrated that I just said the hell with it and stopped shooting it. I did take a close look at my rifle just to see if I installed the sights correctly and I noticed that the front sight base is a little bit off center to the left. I asked a couple of folks at the range if they can take a look at the front sight and they said it was straight. Oh well, maybe it was just me that was off. Maybe next time I'll get it zeroed, if not I'll just go back to my 10/22 and let this one collect dust.

I just got my 795 and noticed that the rear factory sight is as crooked as it can get. Good thing I got a set of tech sight before hand. Off to the range to sight in my rifle.

Just got mine last week. Great Gift from the old man. I am really enjoying this rifle. Thought I wanted a 10/22 but this little guy does everything I want with a .22LR

What is the length of pull for the factory 795 stock?

I want to say 14 inches but im not too sure

its a little long for me, then again, an sks stock and an 870 hogue lop stock are really comfortable for me

If you look at the beginning pages of this thread, you can see that someone has put on a dragunov stock. Later in the thread, I believe it says that there is an area for the magwell that is already scribed, you just need to cut it out.

I just bought a Marlin 795, and I love it. It feels great when holding or firing. I saw that a few people were mounting them onto the ATI Dragunov stock. I am really interested in buying this, but I'm not exactly sure where, and how much I would have to dremel away, to have it fit properly. If anyone could help out, I would be greatly appreciative.

I don't have one of those stocks myself, but as I understand it, you simply have to trim the magazine well area to get it to fit. You can probably eyeball it to start and just trim a bit at a time until it fits. I'm sure someone else will chime in who has installed one.

I just took mine back to the range and had a great time, this was from 25 yards with a mix of Remy Thunderbolts (I know, but I only had one FTF with it out of 200!), Winchester Wildcats and Federal Champion <- $1.47 a box at WW and shoots great. As you can see, this zombie would be toast
